Daytime Emmys Go Prime Time
None of the shows aired on network prime time, but the awards show honoring them did. The 47th annual Daytime Emmys, a special quarantine adaptation, was shown on CBS Friday night, emceed by the hosts of CBS’ The Talk: Sharon Osbourne, Sheryl Underwood, Eve, Carrie Ann Inaba and Marie Osmond, who were in their respective homes.
Big winners were CBS’ The Young and the Restless, which took home the top prize of best drama series; Jeopardy! and host Alex Trebek for best game show and best game show host; and Kelly Clarkson won best entertainment talk show host. NBC’s Today won best morning show and ABC’s The View was named best informative talk show.

It’s about time! Discovery U.S. Hispanic just announced the launch of Hogar de HGTV, a new network offering food and home content to Spanish-language audiences. Set to debut on Tuesday, June 30, the network will first be available to Cox Communications’ Contour TV customers, followed by Charter Communications’ Spectrum subscribers by Saturday, August 1. It’s going to combine the best of HGTV and the Food Network, with advertisers including Walmart, Mondelez, Sprint, Boost, Little Caesars, Daisy and Burlington. In case you don’t know Spanish, this is a brilliant way to learn!

A Sneak Peek at Hamilton on Disney+
Last night, as part of the 2020 ESPYs, Disney+ debuted the trailer for Hamilton, the filmed version of the original Broadway production, ahead of its global premiere on the streaming service on July 3. I’ve reposted it here, to tide you over until then. It looks absolutely astounding.

Just in case you missed his announcement, Jimmy Kimmel is taking a break. “I’m taking the summer off to spend even more time with my family,” Kimmel announced. “My family is healthy, I’m healthy. I just need a couple of months off,” he explained. But during his from-home announcement, his “arch nemesis” Matt Damon, appearing to be clad only in a bathrobe and socks, stepped in. A Great Way to Celebrate Juneteenth
If you haven’t had a chance to see Spike Lee’s exceptional and riveting new film, Da 5 Bloods on Netflix, tonight is an ideal time to do it. It follows four African-American Vets and one of their sons, as they return to Viet Nam to recover the remains of their beloved fallen squad leader, and search for a chest of gold they had previously buried in the jungle. It stars Delroy Lindo, Clarke Peters, Norm Lewis, Isiah Whitlock, Jr., Chadwick Boseman and Jonathan Majors. Lindo’s performance will go down in history, a slam dunk for an Oscar nod.
Hulu Does It Again — This Time With Michael Keaton
How can Hulu go wrong with Michael Keaton, Barry Levinson and a riveting bestseller? You can be damn sure I’ll be watching when they drop the new series Dopesick, based on the book by Beth Macy, about an old school doctor (Keaton) who finds himself embroiled in the opioid crisis. Levinson will direct the project, with Danny Strong (Empire) and Warren Littlefield (The Handmaid’s Tale) producing. If you haven’t read the novel yet, there’s plenty of time before the series premieres on a to be determined date.
Rick and Morty Creator to Give Us More — Yay!
I’m always happy to report when someone from the ‘hood does well. This time it’s our friendly neighborhood Dan Harmon, of Rick and Morty and Community fame, who just signed a broadcast network-only exclusive animation deal with Fox Entertainment, to create and develop a comedy series targeted to debut in spring 2022. Smart man. Animation is one of the few segments of the entertainment industry that has been able to survive and thrive during the quarantine. Actors, producers, animators, musicians — pretty much everyone can work from the comfort of their own homes. And Dan’s is the kind of home you’d never want to leave.

Academy Award nominated filmmaker Steve James (Hoop Dreams, Life Itself) examines racial, economic and class issues in contemporary American education in this multipart unscripted documentary series. Which of Your Favorite Shows Won Peabody Awards This Year?
The official awards ceremony has been canceled, but the Peabody Awards are going out just the same. The Peabodies are awarded annually for “Distinguished achievement and meritorious public service by television and radio stations, networks, producing organizations, individuals, and the World Wide Web.”
