Who Has the Most Certified Fresh Films: Amazon, Hulu, HBO or Netflix?
This just in: a new study from Streaming Observer compares Netflix’s movie library to those of Hulu, Amazon Prime, and HBO Now, using Rotten Tomatoes Certified Fresh ratings as a gauge. (As you know, I’m a Rotten Tomatoes critic)
- Amazon Prime – 17,461 movies total, 232 of which are Certified Fresh (1.3%)
- Netflix – 3,839 movies total, 596 of which are Certified Fresh (15.5%)
- Hulu: 2,336 movies total, 223 of which are Certified Fresh (9.6%)
- HBO Now: 815 movies total, 38 of which are Certified Fresh (4.7%)
- Amazon has the largest library by far (4.5x that of Netflix), yet the lowest quality in terms of Certfied Fresh movies, suggesting there may be a whole lot of fluff to pick through.
- HBO Now only has the smallest library with 815 movies, appearing to support the CEO’s comment that HBO is the “Tiffany” of streaming while Netflix is the “Walmart.” But HBO Now doesn’t appear very curated when you realize that only 4.7% of its movies are Certified Fresh, compared to 15.5% of Netflix’s.
- Netflix has the highest quality movie library, all things considered, compared to the other 3 big streaming services.
- Hulu, while mostly known for it’s TV show library, has quietly come a long way in terms of movies, with nearly 3x as many movies as HBO Now, and the second highest percent of Certified Fresh movies.

A Sneak Peek at Season 2 of AMERICAN GODS
I SO loved Neil Gaiman’s epic novel, American Gods, and Starz TV adaptation does not disappoint.
For those of you unfamiliar with it:
Starring Ricky Whittle (The 100, Nappily Ever After) as Shadow Moon and Ian McShane (Deadwood, John Wick) as Mr. Wednesday, American Gods is a one-hour drama adapted from Neil Gaiman’s best-selling novel about a war brewing between Old Gods and New Gods: the traditional gods of mythological roots from around the world steadily losing believers to an upstart pantheon of gods reflecting society’s modern love of money, technology, media, celebrity and drugs.
In a word, it is epic. And the second season promises to be even better than the first.
Season Two premieres Sunday, March 10th, 2019 at 8PM ET/PT. This, plus Outlander, are worth the price of a Starz subscription alone.
Ron Howard and National Geographic Take a Look at Rebuilding Paradise
Bless them all! National Geographic Documentary Films has commissioned an-depth documentary called Rebuilding Paradise, which will explore the town of Paradise, California, in the Sierra Nevada foothills, as it attempts to rebuild following the devastation caused by November’s Camp Fire.
Ron Howard will direct and Brian Grazer will produce for the duo’s Imagine Documentaries. Howard actually visited the area in December, and told the local newspaper, the Paradise Post, “You have to see it to really believe it, and you have to talk to the people to really feel the level of both the inspiration and, also, the struggle.”

Michele Yeoh Gets Her Own STAR TREK Spin-Off
If you, like I, are intrigued by Season 2 of Star Trek: Discovery, you’ll be thrilled to learn that CBS All Access is proceeding with a Star Trek spin-off series starring Star Trek: Discovery’s Michelle Yeoh as Philippa Georgiou.
“Being a part of this universe and this character specifically has been such a joy for me to play,” said Yeoh. “I can’t wait to see where it all goes – certainly I believe it will go ‘where no WOMAN has ever gone before!’”

What’s Going On With the Brady Bunch House?
A Very Brady Renovation Update: In addition to all their favorite renovation stars, HGTV has called in Lloyd Schwartz, one of the producers of the original The Brady Bunch seriesand son of series creator Sherwood Schwartz, to advise.
The younger Schwartz will offer insights on stories about the set, house and cast. “It’s so surreal that I get to be part of this exciting new chapter of our show,” he said. “In some form, we’ve been on the air since the 1960s. What a perfect way to celebrate our 50th anniversary!”
Steve Carell Goes Back to the Small Screen For a Project That’s Out of This World
Steve Carell is returning to the small screen (and after Welcome to Marwen, can you blame him?) to star in a Netflix comedy called Space Force, based on Trump’s curious demand for a military branch dedicated to protecting our interests in outer space.
Carell is teaming up with Greg Daniels again. The two were driving forces behind The Office.
Here’s some more info from the teaser: “On June 18, 2018 the federal government announced the creation of a 6th major division of the United States armed forces. “The goal of the new branch is ‘to defend satellites from attack’ and ‘perform other space-related tasks’ or something. This is the story of the men and women who have to figure it out.
Sounds like the perfect follow up project after The Office.

And the winner is…Results of the 2019 Critics Choice TV Awards
Hollywood’s biggest night of the year occurred for me and my critic colleagues last night — the Critics Choices Awards, which, like the Golden Globes, awards both TV and film. Here’s a brief rundown of the TV winners. For all winners, including film and some stellar moments, go here.
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel took home three awards, including Best Comedy Series for the second consecutive year. Its leading lady, Rachel Brosnahan, was also a repeat winner for Best Actress in a Comedy Series, and Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series went to Alex Borstein. The Americans earned three trophies as well including Best Drama Series, Best Actor in A Drama Series for Matthew Rhys, and Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for Noah Emmerich. Sandra Oh received Best Actress in a Drama Series honors for Killing Eve, with Best Actor in a Comedy Series going to Bill Hader for Barry.

It’s Fiona’s (Emmy Rossum) last season on Showtime’s Shameless, one of my all-time favorite dramadies. The second half of Season 9 premieres Sunday, January 25, at 9pm, and I’m not going to lie, I’m worried about girlfriend hitting bottom, and possibly not bouncing back up before she leaves the show. I’d love to see at least one Gallagher claw his or her way out.
The future looks marginally promising for some, however. Check out a little taste of what’s in store here:
Al Pacino Makes His Way Back to the Small Screen in a Showtime TV Series
Following Julia Roberts (Homecoming), fellow A-List actor Al Pacino is making a foray into episodic TV, by starring in a 10 episode season of the Amazon drama series The Hunt, which revolves around a band of New York City Nazi hunters in 1977. Pacino will co-star with Logan Lerman.
The show is also a big deal because it’s executive produced by Get Out writer/director Jordan Peele, who couldn’t be hotter at the moment.
Bird Box Breaks Big
The Sandra Bullock apocalyptical thriller Bird Box is raising a lot of eyebrows, not because it’s so harrowing (which it is), but because so many are watching this feature film, and not in the theater. Netflix reports a record-setting 45.3 million of its 137 million accounts watched at least 70% of the movie in the first week of its release. That makes theater owners nervous.
The movie’s budget was a modest $30 million, and while you can’t really calculate box office numbers, Bird Box attracted almost 26 million U.S. viewers in its first seven days. That’s a big deal for Netflix, and might portend some interesting things for the rest of us — we can now watch first run movies at home.

Can You Ever Get Enough of Taye Diggs? He’ll Host the Critics Choice Awards — Yay!
A host who’s hunky yet refined, and has plenty of live stage experience? What more could you ask? I’m sure you can imagine the brilliant shade of pink I was tickled when the official announcement was made that the lovely and talented Taye Diggs will be hosting the 24th annual Critics’ Choice Awards, to be broadcast on The CW Network on Sunday, January 13th from 7 – 10 p.m. ET (delayed PT).
In case you didn’t know, Diggs is currently starring in The CW drama All American and was recently seen in the romantic comedy Set It Up. He was recently seen on season four of Empire as Angelo Dubois.
His television credits also include Private Practice (NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor), Rosewood, The Good Wife, Daybreak, Kevin Hill (NAACP Image Award for Best Actor– Television), Ally McBeal, Will & Grace, Ed, The West Wing, New York Undercover and Law & Order.
This year’s Critics’ Choice Awards are shaping up to be the best ever!
