Celebrity Hot Spot — CAVU
Forget about all those $50-$75 million mansions in Beverly Hills–we’ve found one with all the most coveted luxury amenities and then some, for a mere $12,500,000! And with traffic in L.A. what it is these days, you could easily commute to the studios in Burbank or the tech nuclei in Silicon Beach in about the same amount of time. The stunning CAVU estate (named for the aeronautical term Clear Above View Unlimitted) is nestled against the mountains just southwest of Las Vegas, but it’s less than 15 minutes from the airport and the Strip.
CAVU is a 10+ year labor of love, built by celebrity architects Jon Sparer and John Klai, who are also responsible for star properties like the Belagio in Las Vegas, the Borgata in Atlantic City and the MGM in Macau, among many, many other casino resort properties. So you know that the desert-style contemporary mansion is cutting edge in, well, just about every area. “We wanted it to be a living piece of art,” says Klai.
It certainly is a piece of art from an entertainer’s standpoint. There’s an entire floor for R & R, accessible by pushing the “Play” button in the home’s elevator. There are also several dumbwaiters, of course. Guests can enjoy cocktails at a fully equipped bar,
bowl in the two-lane Brunswick® bowling alley,
or catch a flick in the private movie theater.
There’s also a Vichy spa,
and an 1,800+ bottle, digitally-inventoried wine cellar.
“It became about creating the perfect entertaining home — envisioning the best layout and efficiencies to allow us to have 200-400 people here and still have our own private space,” Sparer added, noting that it’s perfect for fundraisers.
But there’s also plenty of luxe private space for just you and the fam. Totaling 13,255 square feet, the residence includes five bedrooms,
and nine baths, on three levels.
On the main level there’s a modern Italian kitchen with a modular dining table,
an expansive courtyard,
seven fire features,
and a pool / spa.
And when it comes to sleepy time, both family members and guests are uniquely accommodated. “The main structure is really a one-bedroom home,” says Sparer. “The remaining quarters are all outside the main home so our guests have their own rooms; there’s a casita and top-level suite also.”
The unique architecture makes CAVU a stand out as well. The the solar-panel equipped, 140-foot winglike structure, roughly the same size as a 747 wing, covers the home’s south-facing side, providing plenty of shade where it’s needed most, as well as from 1/3 to 1/2 of the estate’s energy demands. A three-foot-thick, 140-foot-long and 24-foot-high rammed-earth wall, built using old adobe principles, insulates internal temperatures while retaining the natural aesthetic. I’m quite in love with this feature, as it’s functional, aesthetically pleasing, green and fireproof — all aspects of great value when you’re living in the desert.
Which segues into the stark beauty of dessert life. Floor-to-ceiling windows maximize views of the desert and nearby city lights. Sparer says there’s nothing more peaceful than sipping coffee and reading the paper in the shade, while quail, rabbits, hummingbirds and other desert wildlife pass by, almost close enough to touch.
So how can the two architects bare to part with such a desert paradise? “We’ve lived here over 4-and-a-half years now,” says Sparer. “If you’re not moving forward, you’re falling behind.” They have a home in San Diego, and they also travel a lot, so they don’t feel they’re utilizing the home as much as it deserves. They’ve already purchased an older home in the revitalized downtown district of Las Vegas, where they’ll be able to walk or bike to business meetings, shops and restaurants with the three dogs they’ve rescued. “Downtown Las Vegas is the new, hip place to be,” says Sparer.
And what types of clients will be attracted to CAVU, according to its creators? “We see it as the perfect spot for an entertainer or a sports figure who likes privacy, yet who likes to entertain,” says Sparer.
I came up with a few celeb suggestions of my own. Mariah Carey, Jay Leno, Ray Romano and David Spade, for example, are among the celebs who frequently perform in Las Vegas, and might enjoy a stylish and well priced pied a terre to call their own in the area.
Ben Affleck, Tobey Maguire, James Woods and Jason Alexander often play in major Las Vegas poker tournaments, and could use their winnings for a down payment.
It’s the perfect, secure and inspiring creative space for any of the Imagine Dragons, who are famously based in Las Vegas.
And last but not least, Lil Wayne, Paris Hilton and Motley Crue’s Vince Neil all could use a permanent LV place to lay their heads, because they’ve been kicked out of some of the top resorts/casinos in town.
