Marlon Brando Home for Sale — Many Other Stars Shined Here Too
You can’t help but wonder if the neighbors complained about some guy staggering around his yard and yelling “Stella!” night and day. After all, this Hollywood Hills estate was Marlon Brando’s first home in Los Angeles after he starred in the Broadway production “Street Car Named Desire” in New York City. Brando owned the estate from 1953-1965, while focusing on his film and television career in Hollywood, and after that, it was a virtual celebrity farm for many years. Today it’s on the market for the relatively reasonable (by Hollywood standards) price of $3.495 million.
You could fill a constellation with the stars who have walked these hallowed halls. From 1968-1969, the property was occupied by an ashran and commune called the LA Yoga IYI. Its heavy hitting membership included recording artists such as Joan Baez, Carole King and James Taylor. Actors who did yoga there included Stacey Keach and Tina Louise, aka Ginger, from Gilligan’s Island, as you may or may not recall.
After that, actor, martial artist and creator of “Kung Fu”, David Carridine purchased the property with his wife, Barbra Hershey (Barbara Seagull) who has been rather busy of late, appearing in Black Swan and the Insidious films, as well as in the TV series Damien and Once Upon a Time. Rumor has it that Frank Zappa lived there for awhile as well. The current owner of the .67 acre property is Jack Baumann, who previously worked as Chief Legal Executive for Public Storage Corp.
So if you were to purchase this star studded home, what would you be getting in addition to the distant spirit of numerous showbiz icons? The main residence was built in 1939 by Paul Williams, another Southern California icon, of the architectural variety.
The home has five bedrooms and five baths,
and is gated and extremely private. The main level includes the master suite and three additional bedrooms,
a dining room,
a living room,
a sunroom,
a deck and an updated chefs kitchen with Viking appliances.
The lower level features two guest suites and a large family room, which opens to a park like backyard.
Outdoors there’s a private pool with two large grassy areas on either side, a barbecue area, a bamboo forest and a sports court.
Joe Babajian of Rodeo Realty has the listing.
