Tonight the Critics Choice Association (CCA) announced the winners of the 27^th annual Critics Choice Awards LIVE on The CW and TBS during an in-person ceremony.  This year’s event was an international affair, with celebrations in both Los Angeles and London.  The star-studded gala in Los Angeles was held at the Fairmont Century Plaza Hotel, while in London more stars gathered at the Savoy Hotel for a late-night soiree that was part of the live telecast.

“The Power of the Dog” led the winners in the film categories, earning four awards including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay for Jane Campion, and Best Cinematography for Ari Wegner.  “Belfast” and “Dune” followed closely behind in the trophy count with three awards each.

In the series categories, “Ted Lasso” took home four trophies, winning Best Comedy Series, Best Actor in a Comedy Series for Jason Sudeikis, Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for Hannah Waddingham, and Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for Brett Goldstein.  “Succession” won three awards including Best Drama Series, Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for Sarah Snook, and Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for Kieran Culkin.

As was previously announced, Jimmy Kimmel presented the Lifetime Achievement Award to Billy Crystal in a very special highlight of the evening.  And Issa Rae presented this year’s SeeHer Award to Halle Berry.  The SeeHer Award recognizes a woman who embodies the values set forth by the SeeHer movement, to push boundaries, defy stereotypes and acknowledge the importance of authentic portrayals of women across the entertainment landscape.

It’s highly anticipated, sweeping drama series told across three languages – Korean, Japanese, and English. Epic in scope and intimate in tone, the story begins with a forbidden love and crescendos into a saga that journeys between Korea, Japan and America to tell an unforgettable story of war and peace, love and loss, triumph and reckoning.

The series will premiere globally on Apple TV+ on March 25, 2022 with the first three episodes followed by new weekly installments each Friday during its eight-episode season through April 29, 2022. The series is based on the acclaimed New York Times bestselling novel by the same name and is created by Soo Hugh.

Filled with universal themes of family, love, triumph, fate and resilience, the series chronicles the hopes and dreams of a Korean immigrant family across four generations as they leave their homeland in an indomitable quest to survive and thrive.

Starting in South Korea in the early 1900s, the story is told through the eyes of a remarkable matriarch, Sunja, who triumphs against all odds. It juxtaposes her story with that of her grandson, Solomon, in the 1980s.

Pachinko is written and executive produced by Soo Hugh (The Terror, The Killing), who created the series and serves as showrunner. Kogonada and Justin Chon are executive producers and directed four episodes each, with Kogonada directing the pilot. Michael Ellenberg and Lindsey Springer executive produce for Media Res; Theresa Kang-Lowe executive produces for Blue Marble Pictures; and Richard Middleton also executive produces. Media Res’ Dani Gorin co-executive produces along with David Kim and Sebastian Lee.

The series stars Academy Award-winning actress Yuh-Jung Youn as “Older Sunja”; Lee Minho as “Hansu”; Jin Ha as “Solomon”; Minha Kim as “Teenage Sunja”; Anna Sawai as “Naomi”; Eunchae Jung as “Young Kyunghee”; Inji Jeong as “Yangjin”; Jimmi Simpson as “Tom Andrews”; Junwoo Han as “Yoseb”; Kaho Minami as “Etsuko”; Steve Sanghyun Noh as “Isak”; Soji Arai as “Mozasu”; and, Yu-na Jeon as “Young Sunja.”

Cross your fingers: This could be epic!

At last! A half-hour comedy that’s original, interring, quirky and actually, dare I say it, funny. That would be he new HBO Max comedy Our Flag Means Death, created by David Jenkins and co-staring Taika Waititi, who is also an executive producer/director/ and director.

Believe it or not, it’s based on a true story about Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby), an 18th century aristocrat who decided in a fit of extreme mid-life crisis insanity to abandon the lap of luxury—and his wife and two children along with it—for rollicking high seas adventure as a pirate. It’s a truly amusing slice.

It’s the moving story of seventeen-year-old Ruby (Emilia Jones), the sole hearing member of a deaf family – a CODA, (child of deaf adults). Her life revolves around acting as interpreter for her parents (Marlee Matlin, Troy Kotsur) and working on the family’s struggling fishing boat every day before school with her father and older brother (Daniel Durant).

But when Ruby joins her high school’s choir club, she discovers a gift for singing and soon finds herself drawn to her duet partner Miles (Ferdia Walsh-Peelo). Encouraged by her enthusiastic, tough-love choirmaster (Eugenio Derbez) to apply to a prestigious music school, Ruby finds herself torn between the obligations she feels to her family and the pursuit of her own dreams.

We have no idea about the casting or plot yet, but we’ll watch regardless. Apple TV+ has ordered a series inspired by Fritz Lang’s 1927 film Metropolis. And get this: it’s being developed by Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail, who will write and direct. The series is from Universal Studio Group’s UCP. Anything that depicts a dystopian futuristic world ruled by a wealthy elite while workers toil underground is right up our alley.

Have you seen the new bone dry dramady Severance yet? If not, run, don’t walk to your TV to at least see the first episode and decide whether or not this quirky series in for you.

From director and executive producer Ben Stiller, Severance is a highly anticipated new drama series that reunites Emmy and DGA Award winner Stiller with Academy Award and Emmy Award winner Patricia Arquette, who stars alongside Adam Scott, Emmy Award winner John Turturro, Britt Lower, Zach Cherry, Dichen Lachman, Jen Tullock, Tramell Tillman, Michael Chernus and Academy Award winner Christopher Walken.

As far as films go, everyone seems to be streaming The King’s Man, which came out around Christmas and was a disappointment in theaters, but definitely worth a watch now that you can see it in the comfort of your own home. The same goes for Nightmare Alley, number 2 on the list.

Yellowstone again tops the list of streaming TV series, with good reason. It’s equally good prequel, 1883 is number 7 on the top 10 list. Apple TV’s brand new Severance, an intriguing, erudite, futuristic workplace saga, is number two, which indicates viewers had particularly sophisticated taste last week.

FX and BBC have set the cast for Great Expectations, the six-part limited series adaptation of Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations from Academy Award^® nominee and BAFTA Award winning writer Steven Knight. The stellar cast will feature Olivia Colman in the lead role of “Miss Havisham.” Colman was most recently seen in Maggie Gyllenhaal’s directorial debut, The Lost Daughter, opposite Dakota Johnson, Jessie Buckley and Peter Saarsgard.

Other Great Expectations cast members include Fionn Whitehead as “Pip” alongside Ashley Thomas, Johnny Harris, Shalom Brune-Franklin, Hayley Squires, Owen McDonnell, Trystan Gravelle and Matt Berry.

Great Expectations is the coming-of-age story of an orphan nicknamed “Pip.” Dickens first released it in a series of weekly chapters beginning in December 1860 before it was subsequently published as a novel.

The hottest true crime, limited series airing right now is Inventing Anna, from Shonda Rhimes and starring Julia Garner. It follows the infamous Anna Sorokin, better known as Anna Delvey, though, for the record, she captured many a headlines with the  “The Swindler of Soho” moniker.  And boy, did Anna make headlines!

Salacious stories aside, there are indisputable facts when it comes to this real life, walking scandal.  The truth is, Anna was found guilty of multiple charges of theft of services and grand larceny. In layman’s terms that means she conned millions out of New York businesses and people in the New York elite.
