Did Beyonce and Jay-Z buy Lionsgate?

Editor’s Note: I admit it — my speculation was off. According to The Wall Street Journal, the answer to the question ‘Did Beyonce and Jay-Z buy Lionsgate?’ is a resounding NO. It went to James and Elinor Randall, formerly of the Allfast Fastening Systems manufacturing company. It would have been a great choice for music mavens, however. We’ll keep you posted on where they finally land.

All over Hollywood tongues are wagging and pundits are speculating: Did Beyonce and Jay-Z buy Lionsgate? Not the studio, mind you, although they could probably pick it up for a song. We’re talking about the lavish Bel Air estate once owned by Kenny Rogers.

What is known about the spectacular property is that someone recently paid $50 million for the place, art, furniture and all. The 11-bedroom, 17-bathroom mansion sits on just about two acres had been on the market for $65 million. Whoever did buy it wasn’t Wynn Resorts CEO Steve Winn, although he had been in escrow on the place. It fell through, according the The Wall Street Journal. The WSJ also reports that listing agent Mia Trudeauof Hilton & Hyland declined to identify the buyers, but said they are “American” and had considered some of the area’s most outstanding estates.

SO, my money’s on the steaming hot hip hop couple. After all, they’re the most prominent shoppers on the market right now, and money is no object. We reported that they were considering the gorgeous “Ray Donovan” house after renting it for $200,000 per month, and that they were also considering the super cool and costly spec home that Minecraft founder Markus “Notch” Persson ended up with for $70 million. In addition, they were reported to be considering the the former Giselle Bundchen–Tom Brady estate that Dr Dre scooped up with $40 million of his new found Beats money.

So, if Jay-Z and Beyonce are indeed the buyers, what will they get for their fine $50 mil? According to the listing, it was originally built in 1938 by Paul R. Williams but refurbished, “re-imagined” and re-sized to total 24,000 square feet of living space, with lux features like:

  • Private ballroom with fully equipped bar and separate guest quarters (with private kitchen and bath) attached. (I’m not quite sure what the attached private quarters are for, but I suppose I could use my imagination)
  • Tournament grade tennis court with bar and seated audience area for guests
  • Glass elevator connecting the tennis courts
  • Fully Integrated Crestron smart home system
  • Full security system, cameras and monitors throughout with hands-on security room off of kitchen (of special appeal to superstars)
  • Lifesource water filtration and water softener system for entire property

  • Guest House with two full bedrooms and baths, living area with open kitchen and gorgeous details and finishes like marble countertops, Wolf stove, Subzero refrigerator and solid walnut floorsDid Beyonce and Jay-Z buy Lionsgate?
  • On-site parking for 25 cars

Now, you may ask, why in heaven’s name is it called “Lionsgate?” Well, it has absolutely nothing to do with the studio. It seems that when Kenny Rogers owned it, he bought two large stone lions, installed them at the entry gate, and voila! The estate had a new moniker.
