Seen the Twisters Movie? Now You Want a Tornado Proof House?
Even if you don’t live in a major storm zone, the Twisters movie may encourage you to go looking for a tornado proof house with a bunker. Here are seven for sale.
As the summer thriller Twisters surges into theaters, we can’t help but think twice about where we’d take shelter if a major tornado hit.
The movie pits man and woman against nature to breathtaking effect, as characters played by Glenn Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones risk life and limb to measure the fury of Oklahoma tornadoes—and hopefully find a way to mitigate the damage.
Much of the film finds Americans scurrying for suitable cover as the twisters rage.
It’s frightening enough to drive even those who don’t live in the United States’ “Tornado Alley” (Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Kansas, South Dakota, Iowa, and Nebraska) to consider retrofitting basements—or maybe even digging basements.
Of course, buying a tornado-ready property, complete with an underground bunker, is another option. When not in use as a safe shelter for the family, bunkers can serve other purposes as storage space, game rooms, gyms, or even shooting ranges, as the home listings below demonstrate.
And while many of these bunkers are found on large acreage, they come with a wide range of price tags. The ones we’ve selected are all listed for under $1 million.
But isn’t your family’s safety priceless? The film might even have you looking forward to a little subterranean quality time with the people love most. Take a look.

13811 State Highway 98, Valliant, OK
Price: $865,000
This inviting, four-bedroom, two-bath barndominium has a huge underground bunker on a property “large enough for a baseball and gymnastics gym,” according to the listing.
Although it sits on 40 acres, the neighbors could hightail it over to your place when they hear a tornado warning and be safe, happy, and forever grateful.
The attractively designed, 3,800-square-foot home includes an open kitchen/living area and a large primary suite with a massive walk-in closet.
Outside, there’s an above-ground pool with a new deck, a pond, pasture, and two shop areas. And there’s a wired propane gas generator, plus rural water and a wood-burning fireplace in case of power outages.
216 Kickapoo St, Easton, KS
Price: $149,900
This “rustic” bunker is definitely a no-frills affair. But the three-bedroom, 1.5-bath home above it is quite cute.
Built in 1920, the 1,383-square-foot interior has been totally remodeled, most recently with new carpet, new windows, and exterior paint. It also features a sun porch and a kitchen with charming blue cabinetry and a white backsplash.
The bathrooms are also new, and the loft space with views of the neighborhood is especially cozy—plus, you can see those tornadoes coming!
3627 Road D, Allen, KS
Price: $749,000
This place is all about the bunker—although there is small, chic dwelling attached to a 4,000-square-foot quonset hut on the 23-acre property. There’s also a decommissioned Atlas E. Missile silo from the Cold War era, complete with a former nuclear missile base underground. The listing describes it as a “prepper’s paradise.”
Located a half-mile from the nearest paved road, 10 acres of the property are enclosed by chainlink and barbed wire. There’s about 15,000 square feet of unfinished underground space that could be finished off to live in, use as storage space, or even rent out as an Airbnb. There’s also a 1,250-foot airstrip, for moving people and supplies in discreetly—or getting them out in a hurry.
460 NE 20 Ave, Great Bend, KS
Price: $979,000
Some properties with bunkers are quite fancy, like this white-washed brick beauty. Built in 2004 and exquisitely remodeled in 2017, the five-bedroom, six-bath, 7,600-square-foot luxury home even has a nicely appointed underground bunker—with a shooting range! We’ll take the listing’s word for it, because there are no photos to prove it.
The 4.2-acre lot is certainly large enough for a massive bunker. It also accommodates three additional buildings, an outdoor shooting range, a generator, and a 7,200-watt solar power system, a saltwater pool, hot tub, and lighted basketball court. Additionally, there is a roughly half-acre, newly fenced livestock pen.
Inside the sprawling home, hickory woodwork, solid-wood doors, vaulted ponderosa pine-beamed ceilings, and a stone fireplace add up to a high-end rustic aesthetic. The basement, which could also provide shelter during a storm, doubles as a family entertainment center with a game room and wet bar.
1776 290th Ave, Charlotte, IA
Price: $690,000
This expansive, 10-acre property has a basement and an additional bunker. The three-bedroom, 2.5-bath ranch house was built in 1998 and has modern decor and interior amenities such as designer lighting, vaulted ceilings, and a spacious great room with a large, open kitchen.
The rest of the property features a huge outbuilding with electrical, plumbing, and the aforementioned bunker underneath. There’s also a stocked pond, two garages for five cars, and a guesthouse attached to the main house via an underground stairway that could also offer shelter during a storm.
1835 Lantana Ln, Kingsland, TX
Price: $489,000
This listing claims the bunker is ideal for storing dry goods, but we’re thinking it looks pretty safe for people as well when there’s a tornado raging. Built in 1985 and extensively renovated, the 2,529-square-foot ranch home has three bedrooms and two bathrooms.
The main house features convenient assets, including an updated kitchen with a breakfast bar and solid-wood cabinets, an open dining/living area with built-ins and even a central vacuum.
The house sits on nearly an acre in Bluebonnet Hills and has a workshop, storage building, greenhouse, raised garden beds, a stone patio with a waterfall feature, and a colorful flower bed. According to the listing, there’s also a “He-shed for tools and she-shed for her stuff.”
10490 Bunker Rd, Edgemont, SD
Price: $369,000
There’s an interesting survival community of bunker houses in Edgemont, the site of the former Black Hills Army Base. This one has the nicest living conditions of the several that are on the market. As you can see, the two-bedroom, one-bath home is set into a small hill and is almost completely underground. The 2,080-square-foot home looks a lot like a subterranean quonset hut.
And the buyer needn’t worry about outside communication, as the house is buried and has a metal roof under several feet of dirt. The place comes with Starlink satellite internet service and a cell phone booster.
An expansive solar power system keeps things running, even in stormy weather, with solar panels and backup generators. Much of the furniture, and of course the power supply mechanisms, are included in the sale.
