Plans for Superman’s Fortress of Solitude In Real Life

Superman flies again in the latest installment of the beloved superhero franchise that sees actor David Corenswet trying on the DC Comics cape for size for the very first time and moves in “temporarily to a new Fortress of Solitude.

Directed by James Gunn, the man behind hits like “Guardians of the Galaxy” and “The Suicide Squad,” the highly-anticipated 2025 adaptation of “Superman,” which hits theaters today, sees Corenswet’s character going up against a terrifyingly sinister Lex Luthor, played by British star Nicholas Hoult.

Corenswet, 32, who stars alongside “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” star Rachel Brosnahan, faces no easy task in filling Superman’s boots, which have previously been donned by a number of other impressive actors, including Henry Cavill, Christopher Reeve, and George Reeves.

Thus far, reviews have been overwhelmingly positive, with The Hollywood Reporter praising Corenswet’s “outstanding” performance, while hailing Brosnahan’s take on Lane as “possibly the sharpest and most captivating interpretation … since Margot Kidder.”

Meanwhile, the New York Times’ critic stated: “It’s a sincere but also goofy movie, with a few well-timed twists on the mythology and a couple of added characters who keep things light at just the right moments.”

Donna Gutto, of May, Inc., said, “One of the most important features I wanted to capture in our design was the frozen tundra and cascade of icicles surrounding his solitude.”

Needless to say, buzz around the movie reached a fever pitch ahead of its release—excitement that prompted design website Houzz to partner with Warner Bros. on a Superman-inspired contest in celebration of the latest DC flick.

The website invited designers from across the globe to put their own spin on the superhero’s iconic Fortress of Solitude, transforming it into a real-life retreat using Houzz Pro’s 3D Floor Planner.

Much like the latest installment of the movie franchise, the designs offer a very new and intriguing perspective on the well-known space—and create a world of possibility for anyone hankering after a Superman-inspired home of their own.

Three finalists were chosen from an array of entries, with Houzz users then invited to vote for their favorite, with the ultimate winner set to be chosen after July 11.

Here, we reveal the top three Fortress of Solitude designs—and the fascinating way in which each entrant interpreted the challenge… and its inspiration.

Each design expert even offered some thoughts on how they could expand their creation to provide unique accommodations for Superman’s beloved canine sidekick, Krypto, revealing how the fluffy white pup could relax in style inside his owner’s private sanctuary.

“When you think of Superman’s home, you immediately think of the frozen tundra landscape with crystal-like stalactites which create his fortress. I wanted to take a different approach in terms of elemental surroundings.

“I would describe my design as an organic modern mountain godly estate, which features tons of natural stones, woods and of course, water everywhere! No sounds of the outside world are able to penetrate through the sounds of 360 degree waterfalls that encompass the entirety of the residence. I had also gained some inspiration from the Greek God of Zeus and his luxurious, gold and elegant domain.

“As for Krypto, being a dog-lover myself, I would never dare disappoint my actual favorite clients! I always take my clients’ pets into consideration, because they are family too and deserve their special little accommodations just as we do!

“Although I have yet to work with a super dog, I get the sense that there would be some similarities that compare to some of my furry clients’ needs, such as getting their own pantries, doggy spas, and sometimes even bedrooms.

“However, for Krypto, I would absolutely have to design him his own specialty hangar-style dog hangout. There would be a floating racetrack on the ceiling for flight and agility, laser-proof walls that would hold up during training sessions, and a salon with a personal stylist to ensure his flawless demeanor is maintained.”

“One of the most important features I wanted to capture in our design was the frozen tundra and cascade of icicles surrounding his solitude. The crystalized icicles offer a decorative and artistic feature we really wanted to be the main focus of our design.

“Most importantly, I wanted to pay homage to the classic comics and films. Blues, natural stones, and glass were included to keep within a true Superman style, but with modern amenities.

“When rummaging through the comic strips, many illustrations have one open great room and one icy grand entrance with views of the entire space. I immediately got the feel of the modern day equivalent of a loft. Masculine, open, icy, loft vibes.

“And to make Krypto comfy there even when Superman is away, I added Superman’s costume. Can you spot it?”

“My Fortress of Solitude relates to the frozen tundra in the arctic fall marble countertops and white terrazzo floors used in the kitchen/master bath. It can also be seen in the deep blue quartz used on the living room fireplace and built-ins.

“However, I still wanted to include a colorful flare in my design. Yes, Superman’s Fortress of Solitude is usually depicted in an icy cold tundra, but why should it be like that inside and out? I believe he would be inspired by all of the different people, places and cultures around Earth.

“I drew inspiration from what I believe is Superman’s view on the spectrum of color.

“I believe that Superman’s powers would have allowed him to see spectrums of color differently than the average human being. And with these powers, his view of the world probably would be a lot more vibrant than yours or mine.

“If I could add anything, it would be an entire room specifically for Krypto. Pets are such an important part of our lives, so I think including a special space to escape and relax would be a great addition.”
