Marvelous Mrs. Maisel

With all of the show’s dancers, musicians, cast and crew staying home, the teams behind The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel collaborated, while remaining socially distant, to create a beautifully produced and inspiring 10-minute narrative music extravaganza, featuring the series’ original songs and performers.

And get this: it’s all for a good cause—to raise awareness and support for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, MusiCares, and Swans for Relief, which the video states, “so that ballet dancers may dance, music creators can continue to make music, and those affected by HIV/AIDS have access to vital services.” <

The video’s narrative plays into the “Miami After Dark” scene from fan favorite episode 5 in season 3—when Midge Maisel and Lenny Bruce have a night on the town in Florida—and features performances of the series’ original songs “One Less Angel,” “No One Has To Know,” and the original recording of “Strike Up The Band,” which was featured in the season 3 opening number.

The video was shot in just 3 days, with over 60 people involved including:

19 tap dancers, all who appeared in the season 3 opening dance number, quarantining across seven states from New York to Iowa to CA and more
  • 20 musicians who played on season 3’s original recordings, quarantining across seven states including New York and Massachusetts
  • Vocalist Darius de Haas, the voice of Maisel’s Shy Baldwin and the series’ The Silver Belles singing trio—Markita Prescott, Alysha Deslorieux, and Brennyn Lark, all filming in different cities while quarantining
  • Ryan Farrell revisiting his role as Brye Adler, the host of “Miami After Dark”—filming from his home in Brooklyn, which was redressed to match to the series’ Miami aesthetic
To work this magic and recreate Maisel’s 1960 aesthetic the show’s award-winning crafts people were brought in virtually to reestablish the era’s look and feel:
  • Costume Designer, Donna Zakowska, did fittings with all of the dancers and performers via video conferencing, and then dancer’s costumes were shipped to their homes.

  • All three series editors Kate Sanford, Tim Streeto and Brian A. Kates divided and conquered, cutting the video together from their remote locations.

  • The video was directed by Leigh Silverman, who directed the actors and performers via video conference, while choreographer Marguerite Derricks directed the tap dancers virtually via video.

You simply MUST see it to believe it!
