Pokemon Detective Pikachu review — 11-year-old critic Winston says it’s “fantastic!”

pokemon detective pikachu reviewTo Pokémon fans new and old: You’ll be glad to see Pokémon Detective Pikachu.

To people who don’t know what Pokémon are, here is a rundown: They are monsters that are captured in a Poké ball, some are cute and some are mean, and they fight each other with different abilities.

But you don’t need to be a Poké expert to enjoy the movie.

In the film, a young man named Tim (Justice Smith) receives news that his detective father has mysteriously died. When he heads to his dad’s apartment he finds a Pikachu (voiced by Ryan Reynolds) that was his dad’s detective partner. That’s not weird in this world. What’s weird is Tim can understand this Pikachu when it talks (everyone else just hears “Pika Pika!”). The two of them investigate Tim’s dad’s death.

Detective Pikachu has amazing VFX, bringing the animated characters to life. It looks so realistic when a  Pikachu interacts with a human being. The film has cameos from beloved Pokémon like Ludicolo, Mr. Mime and Psyduck, who is really cute. The Snubbull (a big, pink bulldog cop) in the movie is nasty at first then he also turns really cute.

The human journalist Lucy Stevens (Kathryn Newton) who helps the investigation is really funny and she is super persistent.

There are fun action sequences, like when they have to run for their lives because the land they’re on is tearing apart. And one with the most powerful Pokémon, Mewtwo, who is pretty scary and cool.

This movie is fantastic and is even better if you are a Pokéfan like me. If you are not, you should still see this movie – though you may come out of it with an urge to play Pokemon Go and catch ’em all.

Rated PG
1 Hour 44 Minutes
