BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY Review—Rami Malek is Somebody to Love

Bohemian Rhapsody Review — The film raucously reminds you of the high concept and high spirit of the mercurial Queen.

Bohemian Rhapsody reviewRami Malek, here-to-fore known as the Emmy Award winning star of the TV series Mr. Robot, literally convinces you in the blink of an eye that he IS Freddie Mercury.

The film opens with an extreme close up of him lying on his side on a bed. All you can see is one eye, with the rest of his face covered by snowy white sheets. The second that eye pops open, you know, you just know, that you’re going to be magically transported into the wild world of Freddie Mercury and one of the most memorable and original rock bands of all time.

The film begins and ends with Queen’s epic performance at Live Aid. What happens in between is the story of how  Farrokh Bulsara, an introverted teen from Zanzibar with an epic overbite, joined up with a group of phenomenally talented and creative musicians to eventually make rock history.

The trip is so much fun yet so moving it doesn’t matter that the story is not 100% accurate and doesn’t truly and completely document the band’s meteoric rise to fame. You can only fit so much in a two-hour film. And it’s irrelevant to most movie goers that troubled director Bryan Singer had to leave the production before it was finished,

Bohemian Rhapsody focuses on Mercury, the music and its origins, and plays down the more lurid details of Mercury’s life. I’m fine with that. I’d much rather remember him for the joy and stunning entertainment he brought to the world. It’s made clear he was a complicated and effusive man, madly in love with his wife and myriad others, and driven to express his passion in unconventional ways, some that delighted the masses.

Is there any among us who doesn’t smile when they here a particular Queen song, because it brings back such happy/crazy/ultra pleasurable memories? Bohemian Rhapsody reunites us with our past and makes us marvel at the genius that created the soundtrack. I’d say that’s a gift.

Rated PG-13
