The true story of the birth of James Mandell as the Retro Sci-Fi Futurist, and how you can tickets to this amazing show

Attack of the Retro Sci-Fi Futurist James Mandell

No other show in the history of entertainment has hit home quite like Attack of the Retro Sci-Fi Futurist, partially because it was born and raised right here in my living room. As a matter of fact, my husband James Mandell is animatedly rehearsing it there right now, even as I type.

Here’s what the show’s about, in the illustrious words of James Mandell himself:

James Mandell Attack of the Retro Sci-Fi Futurist“I’ve turned the story of sci-fi futurism into an eye-candy multimedia event, performing live with original music videos, infernal electronics and comic flare as I chronicle the development of this amazing genre in a show spanning 200 years of incredible imagery.

It’s a ramp-up to the brilliant future coming for us all – and you’re gonna wanna be there for that!”

Sounds ambitious for any one-man show, right? But for a guy to be staging it as part of a personal reinvention at the tender young age of 70, well, to me, it’s nothing short of epic.

As luck would have it, the general public will soon be able to see the witty and engaging James Mandell in Attack of the Retro Sci-Fi Futurist at Hollywood Fringe Fest on June 10, 15, 17 and 23.  You can get tickets here, and if you put my name, ‘Lisa’, in the discount code box, you’ll get a 50% discount. Woo Hoo!

To give you a little background, for those who don’t know, my hubby James Mandell is a New England Conservatory trained, professional musician, and was a solo recording artist with Elecktra/Asylum records in the ’70’s.

Oddly enough, his biggest hit was singing the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles theme song. That’s right — if you’ve heard “Heroes on the half shell, turtle power!” You’ve heard my Man. Too bad he signed off on it, passing on the residuals. It’s a long story, but if we had a nickel  for every time we walk through a casino and hear him belting out that tune from a slot machine… Still, he’s a big hit at ComicCons, and among the sci-fi crowd.

Anyway, Jim went on to other successful endeavors involving music and voice — he was the Music Director at Mattel for awhile, had a post production company on Sunset Blvd. and, for the past 15 years or so, he’s been the founder and president of VoiceOver LA, a voiceover agency and post production studio.

But all that’s about to change in a few weeks, when, at an age when most people are thinking about retiring and gassing up the old RV, Jim reinvents himself as the world’s one and only Retro Sci-Fi Futurist.

James Mandell Attack of the Retro Sci-Fi FuturistHe’s been working for some time on an album called Cereal Atomic,  made up of genius sci-fi songs depicting life 400 years from now, if there’s no nuclear holocaust or alien takeover and everything works out hunky dory. Instead of a dystopian future, he envisions a utopian future, although there are, of course, some amusing bugs. All the songs tell a tale in different genres — we even went to Nashville to record a few  with top musicians there.

So now he’s put a fabulous stage show together, covering the history of his beloved Science Fiction, in song, spoken word, crazy jokes and  fabulous video, in what he calls “Half TED Talk, half rock concert.”

We would LOVE for you to come and see James Mandell in Attack of the Retro Sci-Fi Futurist. I will be there too, of course, for all four performances.
