Celebrity Drought Shaming: Stars Under Fire Over Watering

This is an aerial view of Tom Selleck’s ranch, which he is reportedly keeping green by trucking in water from a neighboring water district’s fire hydrant.

Celebrity drought shaming Tom Selleck photoShame, shame, shame…Shame of pools. Certain members of the Hollywood elite are being conspicuously outed for using more than their fare share of California’s most precious commodity these days. Those brilliant green lawns and lavish swimming pools, once status symbols envied by all, have now become emblems of overindulgence and entitlement.

Tom Selleck is probably the most prominent culprit. The Los Angeles Times reports that the mustachioed actor is being sued by a neighboring water district for sending a tanker truck to fill up at a Thousand Oaks fire hydrant, then driving the water back for use on his 60-acre ranch in Westlake Village. In an interesting turn of events, the Calleguas Municipal Water District actually hired a real P.I. to catch Magnum’s minions in the act on multiple occasions between 2013 and 2015. In November 2013, reps from the Calleguas Water District sent cease-and-desist letters to Selleck at a couple of different addresses, according to a filed complaint. But barely two months ago, the same white water truck was spotted four different times filling up at the same hydrant and delivering the water to Selleck’s property.

(Editor’s note: On July 9, the LA Times reported that Selleck had reached a tentative settlement with the water district, which had asked for reimbursement of the $22,000 P.I. fees and other expenses. It appears that the water coming from the fire hydrant Selleck was using was bought and paid for by a contractor, which may have had an agreement with Selleck. So taking the water might not have been theft, but the crime lies in exporting the water outside of the district, which is illegal. We’ll keep you posted on the details.)

Selleck and a host of other high profile residents live in the exclusive Hidden Valley area, which is not hooked up to a public water supply. Residents rely on water from wells on their own land, but these wells often go dry during severe drought. In most people’s minds, however, that hardly justifies pilfering water from a nearby public facility. Selleck and his reps are keeping mum on the subject.

Celebrity Drought Shaming Kimye Pool

Neighbors are giving Kim Kardashian and Kanye West flack for using enough water to keep their two pools filled and their extensive grounds green.

Meanwhile, over in Hidden Hills, neighbors are complaining about the massive water usage on Kim Kardashian and Kanye West’s new estate. With two vineyards, two pools, acres of green lawns and no wilting in sight, it would certainly appear that the celeb couple is using more than their fair share. The Las Virgenes Municipal Water District, to which Kimye belongs, has asked residents to cut their water usage by 36%. Unless the small family is following the “When it’s brown, flush it down, when it’s yellow, let it mellow,” adage in each of their 10 bathrooms, we think they’re probably not going with the flow. An official with Las Virgenes Municipal Water District estimates that “70 percent of the district’s water is going to the lawn maintenance of about 100 manicured estates,” according to a story on Page 6.

J-Lo’s Hidden Hills estate is for sale. How would “golden” grass affect the price?

Other celebrities in the area who have come under fire for maintaining lush lawns and lavish landscaping while their neighbors’ yards go “golden,” as a slick advertising campagne advices, are Jennifer Lopez, whose home is on the market and would be harder to sell with dead grass. Also, Khloe Kardashian, who bought Justine Bieber’s verdant spread, is still going green, but not in a good way; and British Formula One heiress Petra Ecclestone, who bought the Spelling Mansion and is hardly ever there, maintains vast, gorgeous gardens in Holmby Hills, much to the consternation of her neighbors. With fines for excess water usage maxing out at about $100 in some areas, these multi-millionaires have little incentive for ceasing to let their gardens grow.

Petra Ecclestone, whose famous Holmby mansion was built by the Spellings, has been criticized for maintaining her lush grounds in the face of severe draught.

Celebrity Drought Shaming steve-carell good guyMeanwhile, some stars are actually doing their part, even going above and beyond. Steve Carell is the poster boy for water conservation. Not only is he voicing clever PSA’s with useful tips on how to cut down on water usage, but he’s replaced all the lawns on his Toluca Lake property with artificial turf, and it’s quite attractive, I must say.

Oprah has reportedly cut local water usage on her 40-acre Montecito estate by 50%, taking advantage of her own well water and the contents of a small lake on her property, in addition to letting some of her land go to seed. But on the other hand, Politico reports that she has a massive tanker-truck load of water delivered every morning. Barbra Streisand claims to have cut water usage on her Malibu property by more than 50%, but last time I flew over her spread, which was about two weeks ago, it was still looking pretty green. To be fair, there have been some showers and cloud coverage in her area recently. But there are a lot more brown lawns in Malibu than green ones these days.

And just so you know I’m also making and effort, I’ve been gradually replacing my own lawn with water resistant succulents, and letting a good deal of my grass die. A dead lawn is a badge of honor, according to my husband. Meanwhile, Frankie Feldman is doing his part by watering the lawn in his own personal way, but, as you can see, it’s not helping.

Frankie Feldman believes he’s helping by watering the back lawn in his own unique way.
