The Mad Style of Undurraga Wines

If there’s one thing Mad Men has taught us, it’s that ad campaigns are all about style, and a wit thrown in there doesn’t hurt either. One of the cleverest, and most fashionable ad campaigns I’ve come across in some time is one Testa Wines of the World came up with to promote Chile’s Undurraga wines, and it doesn’t hurt that the chic vintages themselves truly merit the hype.

Although Undurraga is one of the most prestigious and longest operating wineries in Chile, and they ship approximately 1.6 million cases around the world annually, here in the US Undurraga wines might not be the first name on the tip of the tongue when talking about South American vino. Hence the need for a riveting ad campaign from the clever folks at Testa Wines of the World. My new friend Debbie Lane, who runs Testa with her son and daughter, forwarded me the following ideas that her daughter Brianne Bechete, Director of Marketing, had come up with. To summarize, “It’s all about U.”

But as you know, you could have the best advertising campaign in the world, but if your product doesn’t hold up, it’s of no use. So I did a little research and a lot of tasting, and came up with some of my new favorite wines. And I found out I wasn’t alone. Whenever I do tastings, I invite my wine expert friends over to get more educated opinions. Those of us who simply know what we like, and those others who like what they know, all agreed that these Unduraga wines are excellent, and quite the value at a wide variety of prices ranging from about $8 to over $100.

The wines I tasted included Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc and a fascinating and tasty Chardonnay and Riesling mix. Undurraga also makes excellent sparkling wines, a Brut and a Rose–I tried the former. In addition, I tasted the T.H. label (Terroir Hunter), from the same folks, which included an excellent Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and Cargnan.

You can find Undurraga wine in more than 70 countries around the world, so there’s a good chance it will be in your favorite wine shop. Why not grab several bottles next time you see it, and let it pour.
