Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon In Big Little Lies for TV

Proving once again that it’s no longer a fall from grace for an A-List movie star to appear on television, you’ll soon be able to see Academy Award winners Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon in Big Little Lies, a limited episode TV series based on Liane Moriarty popular novel of the same name. And to add even more star power to the mix, one of TV’s finest, David E. Kelley, (Alley McBeal, The Practice, L.A. Law and Boston Legal, among others) is teaming up with them on the project. If that’s not a recipe for Must Watch TV, I don’t know what is.
As you do, when reading the chick-lit-ish murder mystery about a group of Australian mothers living in a resort town, connected by their children’s enrollment at an upscale elementary school, I cast the movie/TV show in my mind, and thought of Kidman immediately for the part of the willowy, distracted, model-type mother with the “perfect” marriage. After all, Kidman is an Aussie and starred in Stepford Wives remake. But I never dreamed she’d do television. Reese Witherspoon, however, couldn’t have been farther from my mind, given that her major motion picture Wild is about to be released, and there’s already Oscar buzz surrounding it.
But with other Oscar winners like Al Pacino, Matt Damon and Matthew McConaughey starring in and receiving Emmy and Golden Globe noms for their small screen performances, I shouldn’t have been surprised.
“Big Little Lies” by Liane Moriarty, by the way, was one of 2014’s best sellers. Not great literature, but an intriguing, well written bit of fluff that is especially appealing to any woman who’s ever had children in grade school. It felt a bit like Desperate Housewives down under to me, which could also be a slam dunk recipe for success. I’ll keep you posted on network news and possible air dates.
