Sometimes the home I write about does not belong to a celebrity, it is the celebrity, as is the case with the new Blu Home model that was recently “placed” on a hillside lot on Kanan Road in Aguora Hills. It will cause you to rethink all the preconceptions you’ve ever had about pre-fab homes, and maybe even residential home building in general.

In essence, Blu Homes, which are spacious, sturdy and stylish, are assembled in a giant naval repair facility in San Francisco, then they’re folded up, packed on a truck, and transported to the site of a prepared lot, at which point they are unfolded and assembled in about a day. You have to see the video (below) to believe it. With steel frames, layers of soy-based insulation, double paned windows and gorgeous, green finishes, they’re on par and with and even exceed traditional lot-built homes.

I’m thinking this could well be the wave of the future in home-building, for those of us who are not outrageously rich and famous, although Blu Homes has indeed assembled multi-million dollar, two-story lodgings in upscale neighborhoods. And while you’re there, check out the very cool and cutting edge Oculus Rift, set up in the home’s showroom/casita. For those of you who have never heard of such a thing, it’s a set of high tech goggles that you strap on and look through while working what feels like a video game control unit. It allows you to virtually walk through a home you’ve designed, inspecting every square foot.This is undoubtedly the wave of the future in home shopping. It’s worth sampling for the bragging rights alone, just so you can tell your friends you’ve used the wondrous new Oculus Rift.
