Katie Holmes Joins Ray Donovan

Anyone familiar with my taste in television knows how I love me some dark and dirty Ray Donovan on Showtime. A little like the Los Angeles version of The Sopranos, Liev Schreiber’s alpha male “fixer” is, not unlike Tony himself, the bad guy you just can’t bring yourself to hate, no matter how much havoc he wreaks on his family and whatever poor sap gets in his way. So I’m doing a little happy dance in anticipation, as the news sinks in that one of the sweetest and most underrated actresses in Hollywood, Katie Holmes joins Ray Donovan in the show’s third season.
It looks like the former Mrs. Tom Cruise (I’m sure she absolutely hates it when people refer to her that way, but I just couldn’t resist) will play a chic businesswoman named Paige, who is the daughter of billionaire producer Andrew Finney (Ian McShane–another of my favorites). Finney has apparently gotten himself into some deep doo-doo, and enlists the stoic but effective Ray to fix things for him. If you’re at all familiar with the series, you know that it won’t take Paige and Ray long to have a go in the sack, giving Katie’s good girl image some much needed edge.
But don’t expect her to become a regular cast member. Her participation was announced today as a “major guest starring role.” But then again, Chris Noth, who plays the bad husband on The Good Wife, still only has “guest star” status, so you never know. It could be one of those situations where the screenwriters throw her against the wall to see if she sticks.
Apparently I’m not alone in my penchant for Ray Donovan. It’s Showtime’s highest-rated drama, right behind Homeland. Ray Donovan’s 12-episode Season 3 is in production right now, where else but in Los Angeles. It will be interesting to see if they do any more filming in that home that Jay Z and Beyonce reportedly rented for $200,000 per month. As far as I know it’s still empty, languishing on the market with that hefty $45 million price tag.
Series regulars coming back for season three include Paula Malcomson, Eddie Marsan, Dash Mihok, Steven Bauer, Katherine Moennig, Pooch Hall, Kerris Dorsey and Devon Bagby. Many of those stars have been busy on their off time, starring in films both big and small. For example, you probably saw Paula Malcomson, who plays Ray’s wife Abby, in The Hunger Games films, as Katniss’s mom (and if you ask me, she’s miscast in both instances, but what can you do?) Even as Katie Holmes joins Ray Donovan, you’ll be able to see her on the big screen in her next in the film, Woman in Gold, with Ryan Reynolds and Helen Mirren, another one of my absolute faves.
