Sprawling Robert Taylor Ranch Hits the Market for $70 Million
The sprawling equestrian estate known as the Robert Taylor Ranch, named after its former owner and cinematic icon, just made an appropriately Hollywood-style premiere on the Los Angeles real estate market.
The blockbuster property—which is the largest single-family residential lot in the City of Angels—is now available for $70 million.
The nine-bedroom, 12-bath Brentwood property was once owned by Taylor, one of the most famous leading men of his era with a film, television, and singing career that lasted from the ’30s through the ’60s. He lived with his equally famous and talented wife, the award-winning actress Barbara Stanwyck.
Taylor starred in Westerns, war, detective, and romantic films, with stars including Will Rogers, Ronald Reagan, Irene Dunne, Greta Garbo, and Lana Turner. Stanwyck enjoyed a 60-year professional career that included 86 films and was known for her strong, realistic screen presence and versatility.
Their estate was as expansive as their careers. It comprises slightly more than 1% of L.A.’s posh Brentwood neighborhood, an unincorporated area that covers about 15 square miles.
The Robert Taylor Ranch not only encompasses over 100 acres of private canyon trails with views that stretch from the mountains to the Pacific Ocean, it also includes approximately 15 acres of flat land, with three residences totaling 20,000 square feet of designer-renovated living space.

In addition, to the delight of developers far and wide, the Robert Taylor Ranch also includes eight Assessor’s Parcel Numbers, which would allow the new owner to divide the massive property into eight separate lots. There’s absolutely nothing like it in this area.
“The Robert Taylor Ranch isn’t just an estate, it’s an entire world unto itself,” says listing agent Rochelle Atlas Maize, of Nourmand & Associates, Beverly Hills. “What captivates me most is the extraordinary blend of scale, seclusion, and soul. It’s where legendary history and elevated lifestyle converge, and there’s nothing else in Los Angeles that compares.”
Robert Taylor Ranch storied history
The property was built in 1950 by prominent architect Robert Byrd for oil baron Waite Phillips of the Phillips Petroleum Co. Taylor purchased the property during his marriage to Stanwyck, and the two were known to do a lot of high-profile entertaining there.
The Los Angeles Times reports that the property was highlighted by a secret casino behind hidden doors. While the casino is gone, the hidden door and hallway, accessed by a rotating bookcase, still remain.
In the mid-’70s, the property was sold to KROQ-FM owner and concert promoter Ken Roberts for what records indicate was the surprising amount of $900,000. He remodeled the home and attempted to sell it several times over the years for sums of about $35 million to $45 million. But, without interested buyers, the property was eventually seized in 2010 by a hedge fund, after Roberts failed to repay a high-interest loan the fund had granted him.
The current owners purchased the ranch in 2015 for $18.7 million and got to work, spending four years and millions of dollars on an extensive remodel by top-tier designers who upgraded every square inch of the living spaces.

The impressive, single-story main house now measures 12,000 square feet and contains seven bedrooms. The most impressive of those bedrooms is the spacious primary suite, with chevron wood flooring, a sunny sitting area, a boutique-style closet, and a rustic yet modern bath with a dramatic skylight.
Many of the expansive spaces feature 17th-century French oak flooring and vaulted ceilings with rough-hewn wood beams.
Other intriguing indoor areas include a dog spa, art studio, massage room, children’s playroom, and workshop. The main residence also features a dramatic, two-story guest wing with a full kitchen, bedroom, and office, which is ideal for a relative, executive assistant, in-laws, or staff.
Out back, there are numerous porches, gardens, decks, a solar-heated pool and spa, plus an outdoor kitchen with a grill and pizza oven. Al fresco dining areas are covered by the shade of trees that have been growing there for over a century.
Other designer accommodations include two detached guest casitas, each with two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a full kitchen, laundry room, and living room.

For the livestock, there’s a fully renovated horse barn with 12 stalls, a tack room, stable manager’s office, break room, bathroom, four-car garage, and lots of storage. There are also corrals and a riding ring. Mini ponies and donkeys are currently enjoying the facilities, but buyers shouldn’t get too attached—they’re not included.
Of practical and mechanical import are features like a private well, generator, and advanced fire-safety system. New systems include electrical, plumbing, HVAC, security, and audiovisual.
While the Robert Taylor Ranch may feel like a Western mountain retreat, it’s just a 15-minute drive down Mandeville Canyon to Brentwood shops and restaurants, and about 30 minutes to the heart of Beverly Hills.

Fabulous property. I believe Taylor move into the ranch in 1956 after marrying Ursula Thiess in 1954.
