HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA 3: SUMMER VACATION: Not Winning with Win
Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation Review
by 10-year-old Winston Ordoña
Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation is a formulaic continuation of the animated series that changes the location, but little else.
The previous films were about Dracula (Adam Sandler) having to open up to something, and his monster friends (Keegan-Michael Key as Murray the Mummy, David Spade as Griffin the Invisible Man, Steve Buscemi as Wayne the Wolfman, and Kevin James as Frank/Frankenstein’s Monster) helping him.
Guess what Hotel Transylvania 3 is about? Mavis (Selena Gomez) gets her dad, the long-lonely “Drac,” to go on a cruise. He falls for the human captain, Erika (Kathryn Hahn), but she turns out to be the granddaughter of monster hunter Van Helsing (Jim Gaffigan), Drac’s nemesis. Will Drac and Erika fall in love, or will she kill him?
This film didn’t have enough laughs to keep from being a waste of time. The best characters, Blobby and Tinkles the gigantic dog, are not featured that often. Tinkles was a good character because he stowed away with the monster kids and has shown loyalty by protecting them. Blobby (the Blob) was also a great character because he can do things that surprise you, like making a kid out of part of himself and pulling a pet out of himself.
A bunch of the attempted humor comes from slapstick, as when Drac and Van Helsing fight. Most characters have at least a few laugh lines, while Mavis turned out to have none. Instead of new good lines, they repeat something a character said a bunch of times for laughs, but it did not work very well. Andy Samberg was very good as Mavis’ husband, Johnny, and was one of the only good performances.
The first two films, Hotel Transylvania and Hotel Transylvania 2, were far better than this one. This movie isn’t amazing, but it’s not horrible either.
