INCREDIBLES 2 Review — After a 14-Year Wait, Is it Worthy?

Incredibles 2 review posterHang on a minute! Before I get into my Incredibles 2 review , I have to mention the Pixar short that plays before it. Whatever you do, don’t arrive at the theater late and miss the tender Bao. Yes, it’s about Dim Sum, but it’s also about a mother’s love, and it’s the sweetest thing since Piper.

And now, for the main feature:

Has it really been 14 years since we met this Pixar animated family of super heroes who became so popular that kids are still dressing up as them for Halloween? I mean, a couple months ago, the 14-year-old kid down the street named his new puppy “Dash” after his favorite member of the mighty Parr family.

The Incredibles have remarkable legs, if you will, so expectations are riding high for the long awaited sequel. It seems a nearly impossible feat, even for animated super heroes, to be able to even come close to the original. And yet…

I’m happy to report that Incredibles 2 is a worthy sequel, continuing in its fine tradition of giving us more fun character development than most animated films. For example, it’s nice to see a Mom (voiced by Holly Hunter) super empowered for once, rather than benignly baking cupcakes and dropping off the kids at school.

As for plot, it’s somewhat forgettable, but that’s forgivable, because almost everything else on the screen is deliriously overwhelmed by Baby Jack Jack finally getting his super powers. That’s worth the price of admission alone.

With recognizable voices of Craig T. Nelson, Katherine Keener, Samuel L. Jackson and my personal fave Bob Odenkirk, it’s worth seeing with a fellow grownup, even if you don’t have children to take along.

But if you’re lucky enough to do as I did and borrow a couple of kids, you’ll be rewarded with gobs of giggles.
