CONCUSSION Review — Should be a Big Hit, But…
It’s a shame that Concussion is being released on Christmas day, among so many other heavy hitters and in the wake of Star Wars. I fear for the success of this excellent film about the doctor who discovers chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) among professional football players, much to the chagrin of the mighty NFL. Had Concussion been released earlier this fall, I believe the film, and lead Will Smith, would have been serious Oscar contenders. As it is, it’s getting lost in the shuffle.
Even the most ardent NFL fans will be shaken and stirred by the discovery of the tragic cerebral side effects suffered by NFL players. Will Smith plays Dr. Bennet Omalu, the outrageously well educated African doctor who risked everything and was horrendously treated for attempting to bring the indisputable condition to the attention of the NFL. It seems the omnipotent organization didn’t like being accused of practices that caused its players to go painfully mad and die.
Since Dr. Omalu made his discovery, by the way, credible studies have found CTE in 96% of the deceased football players examined, and the condition has been identified in high profile players like Frank Gifford, Junior Seau, Dave Duerson and John Mackey. There is currently a billion dollar class action suit against the NFL on behalf of the players, just waiting to be settled.
It’s difficult to explain this condition in an intriguing and understandable way, but Concussion filmmakers managed it quite nicely. It helps that the exceptional Will Smith is supported by brilliant actors like Albert Brooks as his boss, Gugu Mbatha-Raw as his love interest, David Morse as afflicted player Mike Webster, and Alec Baldwin as a physician with NFL ties. Kudos to director Peter Landesman for making this film extremely moving, riveting and accessible.
Concussion is one of those rare message films that doesn’t feel manipulative or heavy handed–in fact, it’s downright enjoyable, yet profoundly moving. If you’ve already seen Star Wars, this is the best Christmas bet for your buck. Be forewarned, however: it might make you re-think enrolling your children in peewee football next year.
