My Critics Choice Nominations — Did STAR WARS Make the Cut?

Critics Choice Awards Nominations

You’ve probably been hearing a lot of announcements lately about awards nominations and winners; Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild, National Board of Review, not to mention the city specific critics organizations like L.A. New York, Chicago film critics, etc. And you might have noticed one glaring omission: Star Wars: Episode VII: The Force Awakens.

Why aren’t the critics and awards voters showing the most anticipated film of all time any love? The answer is simple: most of them haven’t seen it yet. And why hasn’t Disney promoted it to awards voters? Well, in addition to being very afraid of risking pirating, who needs critics or awards? This film is going to make gazillions regardless or awards or critical opinion.

And just because it doesn’t show up at early awards ceremonies doesn’t mean it won’t get any Oscar nods. Oscar nominations have a much later deadline that comes well after the film has been released. Although, to be honest, this is not the kind of film that Academy voters usually go for, regardless of box-office numbers.

So with that being said, today, Friday, December 11, is our deadline for Critics Choice nominations, and I thought you might be wondering which way my professional preferences swing. I’ve listed my nominations below. Feel free to lobby for any of your favorite films, or to ask me what in the $#%&! I might be thinking.

The 2016 Critics Choice Awards will be broadcast from the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica on A&E, Lifetime and LMN on Sunday, January 17 at 8PM ET/5PM PT. T.J. Miller, from Silicon Valley is hosting this year, and we’re combining the TV awards with it, so it will be the biggest, and the best ever. Mark your calendars, and in the meantime, see if you can sway me. See CriticsChoice.com for details.
