Celebs Flock to Conyers Farm, the Holmby Hills of the East Coast–Now You Can Too!
If there’s one neighborhood in L.A. where the most impressive estates per capita are located, that would probably be Holmby Hills. Its East Coast counterpart would most likely be Conyers Farm in Greenwich, Connecticut. Glitterati such as Ron Howard, Tom Cruise, Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake, Paula Zahn and sports figures Ivan Lendl and Allan Houston have all owned properties here, Howard recently selling his for $27.5 million. If you act fast, you might be able to live here as well, because there’s an amazing property available for only $10,975,000.
That might sound like a large fortune, but consider the fact that a tricked out, 13-acre property in Holmby Hills like this, if you could find one, would likely list for nothing less than $75 million. No property in the exclusive, gated, Conyers farm area consists of less than 10 acres, and all the mansions are stunning, but this one takes the cake.
It includes amenities like a full tennis court with a 50 ton chiller that converts it to a hockey rink over night,
with an adjacent club house,
and fire ring to keep fans warm on a cold winter’s night.
There’s also an observatory with a retractable clamshell dome and remote-control telescope, designed by Thomas Back, if you’re interested in seeing stars of a celestial nature up close and personal.
Other extreme luxury amenities include a 3,000 bottle wine cellar,
a “Jewel Box” style home theater designed by Theo Kalomirakis,
an English greenhouse constructed by Hartley Botanic,
and a heated pool with a pergola-shaded pool house.
The grand, Georgian, Colonial-Revival-style main residence has seven bedrooms,
and nine bathrooms,
in 12,988 square-feet of space. Colonial Revival is to the East Coast what Mediterranean Revival is to the West Coast.
“In New York, we were living in a two-bedroom apartment,” says the seller, a key executive from one of the world’s leading New York private equity firms. “There, you had to negotiate for a tiny piece of park land in the middle of the city,” he says. “When we moved to Conyers Farm, I didn’t quite realize we’d be living in our own park setting. But now that I’ve had time to be here, I’ve realized there isn’t anything quite like it. If you want space, you want the outdoors, and flexibility to do what you want with your property, you have that here — and at the luxury level you want.” He and his family lived there for 20 years.
If the property itself isn’t impressive enough, consider the area. Only a 38-minute train ride from New York City, Conyers Farm is completely gated, with 24-hour guard service, and has been ranked as by Forbes as one of the most private gated communities in America. It has also been ranked as one of the 25 wealthiest communities in America by Business Insider. It’s the site of the world-renowned Greenwich Polo Club, which is frequented by the British Royal Family, and is also the home of White Birch, one of the most successful polo teams in history. Conyers Farm has nearly eight miles of biking, running and walking trails and is surrounded by wooded areas with mature trees.
“Sports figures, C-level executives and famous people can live anywhere in the world, but they choose to live here,” said a neighborhood resident. Can you blame them? If I had $11 million to spend on a home, I’d pack up and leave tomorrow, rather than live in one of the paltry shacks the same amount of cash could purchase here in Los Angeles.
