It doesn’t get any more quintessentially LA than this midcentury modern, Mulholland Drive masterpiece, owned by an award winning writer/director and a celebrated multimedia artist.

Designed in 1972 by prominent architect Robert S Wilkerson, AIA, known for his stylish midcentury homes in the area, the three bedroom, three bath, single story home sits just up a long, private driveway canopied by mature oaks and redwoods. Located not far from the Sepulveda corridor, it offers quick access to most of L.A.’s most prominent studios.

“The privacy should appeal to buyers with the private approach, the seclusion and views of course, all while being 10 minutes from Sunset Boulevard,” said listing agent Carrie Eckert of Nourmand & Associates.

The home’s owners are the husband and wife writer/director John Hillcoat and renowned photographer and multimedia artist Polly Borland, who, records indicate, purchased the home in 2012 for $1,640,000.

Hillcoat is known for films including The Road and The Proposition, which was recently named one of the best Western movies of all time by Rotten Tomatoes as well as music videos for artists including Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Elvis Costello, Depeche Mode, Maroon 5, Bush, Crowded House and Siouxsie and the Banshees.

If you’re familiar with his work, you might recognize this modern home, as he’s shot a number of is projects there. He credits it with a great deal of his inspiration.

Creatively, the home inspired me to use it in music videos and my main office was in the home, where I worked from,” he told At Home In Hollywood. “I could be cocooned by the surrounding nature, look out to vast views to clear the head or search for new ideas and make brainstorming calls where I could keep active walking around.”

Borland, best known for her editorial portraits, has won multiple awards and honors for her books and exhibitions, which have been displayed and lauded worldwide. Some of her artwork can be seen in the listing photos, and appears to be an intrinsic feature in the home.

If the buyer feels the home wouldn’t complete without it, Borland notes, “The artwork is for sale through Wilding Cran Gallery in LA,” she told At Home In Hollywood.

She also said the home influenced her art. Her artistic eye is evident in the “We installed cabinets in the carport to fit in with the design of the exterior of the house. “It’s a very inspiring house with incredible privacy. It feels like you are in the country surrounded by trees with incredible views and beautiful interior post and beam original features.”

Borland adds that she and her husband expanded on the original features. “We installed cabinets in the carport to fit in with the design of the exterior of the house,” she said. “We also created the cactus garden surrounding the property with succulents and flower beds in the driveway as you approach. Italian Cork floors replaced the concrete floors also, they felt accurate to the period of the home.”

“I represented John and Polly 14 years ago when they purchased this home, and they have transformed it to be a really incredible escape from the city and the location, just off Mulholland Drive, is iconic,” said Eckert. “Both John and Polly, as a filmmaker and a visual artist are extremely visual people, so the home made sense to them with the architectural lines and the views, they fell in love with it right away.”

The 2,569 square foot home is situated on an almost half-acre lot, and designed to make the most of its city and canyon views. Walls of glass frame sweeping views and fill the living spaces with natural illumination. Clerestory windows, and skylights bathe the interiors in warmth and ever-changing sunlight.

Sliding glass doors open to an expansive view deck overlooking Universal City, the San Fernando Valley, and the Verdugo Mountains. To the east, iconic vistas of the Hollywood Sign and Griffith Observatory serve as a constant reminder of the home’s extraordinary Los Angeles setting.

It’s clear the home features numerous modern amenities, as well as references to its historic LA pedigree. “I mean, what do you think of when you hear ‘Mulholland Drive’ ? asked Eckert. “David Lynch and David Hockney, it cannot get more Los Angeles than that.”
