STRAYS Review — Raunchy, But Doggone Funny
Lisa Johnson Mandell’s positive Strays review says you’ll either be highly offended or laugh your tail off. You know who you are.
The first thing you need to know about Strays is that just because it’s about adorable dogs on a quest to find a fur-ever home, it’s NOT FOR KIDS. It’s rated R, for heaven sakes, and it’s a pretty hard R at that.
The second thing you should know about Strays is that if you can take the outrageously raunchy language and humor, and/or if you have a dog yourself, you will howl with laughter.
It’s a live action/CGI story of an adorably mangy little mutt named Reggie (Will Ferrell) who is hopelessly dedicated to his dirtbag owner Doug (Will Forte), despite the fact that Doug heinously mistreats him and is constantly trying to ditch him.
One day, Doug drives three hours to the big city and intentionally hurls a tennis ball so far Reggie can’t possibly retrieve it before Doug jumps back in his truck and races away.
Alone and afraid but still committed to retrieving that ball for Doug, Reggie runs into a friendly pack made up of Bugs (Jamie Foxx) Maggie (Isla Fisher) and Hunter (Randal Park), who explain what real human love looks like. Together they set out on a racy, incredible journey to separate Doug from his favorite appendage.
Yes, it’s like that. Director Josh Greenbaum (Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar) goes totally off-leash.
I took a group of my besties from the dog park with me, and I was a little concerned that it might be too blue for us, until we all started loudly dissolving into splashy puddles of laughter. We know (own) those dogs — the sweetest one who savages bunnies if she gets the chance. The jowly one who’s always in a cone. The un-neutured one who is constantly trying to fulfill his special purpose.
God love our dogs, is that really what they’re saying when they’re barking at the mailman?
This is not the best in show when it comes to dog movies, but it may be the most raucous. If you command your inhibitions to sit and stay, you’re sure to get a treat.
