LONG SHOT Review — It Hits a Perfect Comedy Bullseye
Long Shot review — A classic rom com with a killer cast, full of biting humor and hilarious plot twists? Yes please!
If you’re looking for the ideal movie to ease you back down after the fervor and fever pitch of Avengers: End Game, this is it. Who would have thought the graceful, elegant and Oscar winning Charlize Theron and the nerdy, often outrageous Seth Rogan would make such a perfect pair?
She’s Charlotte Field, the Secretary of State with her eyes on the prize of the Presidency. He’s Fred Flarsky, a schlubby, out of work journalist recruited to be her speechwriter for the purpose of lightening her up. It turns out these two have met before—he had irrevocably embarrassed himself when she was babysitting him more than 20 years ago. It’s every kid’s worst nightmare.
The two of them are divine, whether they’re together onscreen or apart. But that supporting cast, liberally laced with some of my favorites, does so much more than support:
Bob Odenkirk plays an actor who was the President on a TV series, then got elected to the highest office in the land for real, and decides he doesn’t want to run for a second term because he wants to transition into film.
Alexander Skarsgard is the dorky/hunky Prime Minister of Canada who may or may not be a romantic interest for Charlotte.
O’Shea Jackson Jr. is Fred’s super cool best friend and mentor.
Andy Serkis would make Mike Meyers envious as an obnoxious media mogul.
Now Long Shot is a bit on the raunchy side — they go overboard with a Something About Mary moment, and an overwhelming number of F-Bombs are dropped. So it’s not R-rated for nothing.
But it is destined to be one of the funniest and most memorable rom coms of the year.
