Judy Garland’s Over-the-Rainbow Mansion Is Listed for $11.5 Million
Wouldn’t it be nice to click your heels three times, say “There’s no place like home,” and end up in a stately Bel-Air mansion?
That’s entirely possible, if you throw in $11,495,000—the listing price of Judy Garland‘s former, East Coast-style home in the upscale Los Angeles neighborhood.
Along with the guidance of her mother, Ethel Marion Gumm, Garland commissioned architect-to-the stars Wallace Neff to build the classic residence in 1938, when she was just 16. It was the same year she was cast as Dorothy in “The Wizard of Oz.”
Garland, her mother, grandmother, and sister lived in the house for a number of years, but it’s unclear exactly how many. There are photos of Garland with her friend and co-star Mickey Rooney in the living room. And there’s another photo of her with her first husband, band leader David Rose, on the brick steps in the backyard.
The home was reportedly rented by Quincy Jones and the late Marvin Gaye at some point.
Well-maintained mansion
What is clear is that the 2.7-acre estate has been extraordinarily maintained and updated over the years. The home has had just three owners other than Garland, according to Compass listing agent and “Million Dollar Listing Los Angeles” star Josh Flagg.
Los Angeles Times heiress Stephanie Booth Murray, who bought the property in February 2011 for $5.2 million, made some renovations and flipped it in 2012. She listed the place for $7.1 million and sold it for $6.7 million to current owners Allen and Jill Chozen. They remodeled even further but were careful to leave much of the old Hollywood glamor intact.
They selected elegant features, including enriched-hardwood flooring and custom Seagrass rugs, which accent the original storybook windows.
Private gates at the property’s entrance lead to a circular driveway that passes over a creek and winds through meticulously manicured grounds.
The formal entry to the 5,513-square-foot home features a traditional, sweeping staircase with an original, wrought-iron railing. The foyer opens to a formal living room on one side and a formal dining room on the other.
A tasteful chef’s kitchen is highlighted by top-of-the-line appliances and an expansive, marble dining island. The cook space flows into a sunny breakfast nook with a bay-window banquette.
There are five large bedrooms, all en suite. The primary suite includes raised ceilings, a built-in dresser and bookcases, a fireplace, dual walk-in closets, and a lavish dressing room/bath.
From the primary suite, there are clear views of the lush backyard, which features a brick-lined patio, lush lawns, and a brick-decked pool with a pool house—designed to be used as an office or a studio.
Garland, the consummate entertainer and mother of Liza Minnelli and Lorna Luft, died in 1969 at age 47. She began performing as a child, with her two older sisters, in a vaudeville act. In her early teens, she transitioned to film. Best known for “The Wizard of Oz,” she also received acclaim for “Meet Me in St Louis” and “Easter Parade” and received Oscar nominations for her performances in “A Star Is Born” in 1954 and “Judgment at Nuremberg” in 1961.
Garland recorded eight studio albums, performed record-breaking concerts around the world, and hosted “The Judy Garland Show,” an Emmy-nominated television series.
