5 Happy and Historic Craftsman Bungalows Priced at $400K or (Much!) Less
Nothing says hearth and home like the humble Craftsman bungalow, with its traditional gabled roof, pleasant porches, and prominent wood work.
Although the style originated in India, there’s something that seems so historically American about them. Perhaps it’s because the American Arts and Crafts movement imported this style and handily adapted it to various parts of the country—you see mission style in the West, Tudor Style in the East, Prairie style in the Midwest, and an almost tropical style in the South.
Among the Craftsman bungalow’s many assets are style, character, durability and, for some reason, affordability. So many are old; but they’re built so well, they take renovations in stride—and if the work is done well, they’ll end up looking better than they did when they were new. Still, they’re consistently reasonably priced. What other types of homes can boast those same virtues?
We’ve found five this week that are especially charming and have particularly charming prices—all at or below $400,000. Whether you’re considering them as a starter home, a rental, a family home, or a retirement perch, you’re sure to see at least one that catches your eye.
1. 1009 W Morton St, Denison, TX
Price: $315,000
Historically speaking: Pristinely spruced up for short-term rental use, this 1928 Craftsman is absolutely turnkey. Echoes from the past include period light fixtures, original hardwood floors and exposed wood ceilings. But modern updates are many and include a new primary bathroom with a dressing area and double closets, plus a newer HVAC system, completely revamped wiring, a newer roof, and updated plumbing.
There are three bedrooms and two baths in this beautifully decorated, 1,850-square-foot home. There’s also an additional workshop/barn out back that is wired for electricity and currently staged as a party venue.
The .26-acre lot, set in a neighborhood known for its expertly restored vintage homes, has a fire pit and conversation area.
The town of Denison is famous as the birthplace of Dwight D. Eisenhower and not as famously known for being the birthplace of John Henry “Doc” Holliday. The immense Eisenhower State Park on the shores of Lake Texahoma is conveniently close to this pretty little Craftsman. That proximity is partially responsible for its popular Airbnb status.
2. 1111 S Tennessee Ave, Lakeland, FL
Price: $400,000
Mellow yellow: They don’t call the town Lakeland for nothing.
This buttery, Craftsman bungalow in the town’s historic district is within walking distance of two lakes and is just a few blocks from beautiful downtown Lakeland. Both business and pleasure are equidistant from this lovely cottage.
Measuring in at 1,316 square feet, the two-bedroom, two-bath home was built in 1925. The layout is uncommonly open and light filled, and the original hardwood flooring is laid in a rare, picture-frame design. More typically Craftsman-esque details in include a gracious front porch, built-in bookshelves, and arched doors and passageways.
Among the newer upgrades are one bathroom renovated in 2019 and the other updated with a jetted tub. There’s also fresh exterior paint, a drip-irrigation system on the front porch for potted plants, a small shed, tankless hot water heater, and a wooden deck behind the house.
Even better, there’s ample room for recreation and entertainment on the 6,752-square-foot lot.
3. 2915 Church St, Georgetown, CA
Price: $399,500
Gold rush: Nestled in Northern California’s mountainous “Mother Lode Country,” this Craftsman is quite the discovery in a famous mining town location. It’s oh, so close to the historic village’s galleries, restaurants, and shops but also near recreational activities on the American River, where miners used to fish and successfully pan for gold.
This 1932 home has only one bedroom and one bathroom right now, but it’s easy to see how other spaces in the 1,000-square-foot cottage could easily convert to a second bedroom. There’s also a detached barn, which the listing suggests could be fixed up and used as an individual dwelling unit rental, a farm stand, a shop, or for any number of other purposes.
Of course, there’s room for quite the crowd on the home’s inviting, 7-foot-deep, wraparound porch. Inside, owners and guests alike will admire the open floor plan, high ceilings, and abundance of light that streams in through multiple windows. The real showstopper, though? We’ve gotta say, it’s definitely the built-in bookcases with leaded-glass doors.
4. 520 N Santa Fe Ave, Tulsa, OK
Price: $229,900
Red door special: Located in Historic Owen Park, this two-bedroom, one-bath Craftsman bungalow, built in 1920, has original hardwood flooring and French doors. Plus, two ornamental fireplaces add to its cozy vibe.
It also features 1,348 square feet of “flexible” living space, according to the listing, and a laundry space in the unfinished basement, which could be renovated for even more room. The kitchen has been partially updated and offers a handy pantry niche. And the bathroom is new and surprisingly luxe.
Listed as the “Perfect home to restore or modernize,” you can tell it needs a little work; but you’ll also note that it’s brimming with potential. There’s room for a garden and a patio on the 7,013-square-foot lot.
The place has been on and off the market, with some price reductions, for quite a while now. So, it might be an ideal time to make a deal.
5. 1829 McDowell St, Augusta, GA
Price: $245,000
Sweet from the street: You can tell this 1930 stucco Craftsman is special when you pass by. From its sweeping, side-gabled roof and brick front porch to its classic, double-hung windows, it’s a real standout. With two bedrooms and two baths tucked into 1,596 square feet, there’s a lot to like about the inside, too.
It features original oak flooring, two fireplaces, and a recently redone kitchen with stainless steel appliances. Bonus spaces include a den that spans the back of the house and a double garage/workspace.
Set on a fenced and landscaped 7,405-square-foot lot, it’s convenient to the Augusta University campuses, Paine College, a medical complex, and several parks. It’s the ideal abode for university employees, students, or medical staff.
