After Almost 30 Years, the Joe Mantegna House is for Sale
The Joe Mantegna house — The end of his stay there coincides with the end of his Criminal Minds TV series.
For nearly 30 years, Joe Mantegna and his family lived in a Tudor-style manor in Toluca Lake, an enclave coveted by entertainment industry pros thanks to its proximity to Warner Brothers, Disney, and Universal studios.
Now, just as Criminal Minds, the series Mantegna starred in for 13 years, airs its last episode, the actor and his wife of 45 years, Arlene Vrhel, are ready for a change, and have put their stately home on the market for $4.2 million.
Mantegna bought the home in 1991 for $1,580,000, when the 1989-built residence was relatively new. The family enhanced and renovated the property over the years, keeping it up with today’s tastes. The four-bedroom, six-bathroom home is light, bright, and expansive, yet still feels warm and cozy, according to listing agent Craig Strong of Compass.
“When you enter the gates, it truly feels like a private estate, because of the spacious lot and the size of the home,” says Strong, who notes that when a home of this size has only four bedrooms, you know all the rooms are going to be expansive.
Possibly the largest and most popular room in the house is the grand media and game room, which features a vaulted ceiling, built-in bar, fireplace, and retractable movie screen. “It’s the room everyone gravitates to,” says Strong.
The rest of the home has plenty of charm as well. In keeping with the Tudor style, it has a timber, brick, and plaster exterior; diamond-pane, leaded-glass windows; rich hardwood floors; wall moldings; and tray ceilings.
And while the home is traditional in style, some rooms are modern. The kitchen is equipped with stainless-steel appliances, a wood-clad island, and recessed lighting—elements which blend seamlessly with the glass-front cabinetry and farmhouse sink.
Off the kitchen is a casual dining area and family room, and the formal dining room is in the front of the house.
French doors lead to a backyard with a large pool and spa, fireplace, patio, and a quaint deck, from where guests and residents can enjoy the manicured lawn and mature landscaping.
The upper level of the house includes an elegant office, a homework room, and a luxe master suite. The latter features a fireplace and sitting area, heated floors, his-and-her closets, a balcony, and a spa bath.
In addition, the upstairs bookcases hide secret rooms. One swings open to reveal two extra bedrooms, and another has a built-in doll house.
Mantegna, 72, got his start on Broadway, winning Tonys for his performance in original productions of Hair and Glengarry Glen Ross. He’s been starring in the CBS TV series Criminal Minds since 2007, but has also had recurring roles in Soap,The Starter Wife and The Simpsons.

I call it Apocalypse Now meets Steve Jobs. I’m Irish and can tell a good story. After you sell your house maybe we could visit.
