Calling all followers of rock royalty: Southern California’s Buckingham Palace just hit the market, listed for a king’s ransom at $22.5 million.
But the palatial estate designed by Kristen Buckingham, wife of Fleetwood Mac lead guitarist Lindsey Buckingham, isn’t a castle that’s been passed down for centuries—in fact, the Buckinghams have never lived there — they purchased it as a development project.
The Buckinghams bought the property in Brentwood in 2012 for $5.8 million. They demolished the existing home and built an elegant Georgian-style mansion in its place.
“Kristen Buckingham is a talented interior designer who spared no expense designing this, as if she were going to move into it,” says listing agent David Offer of Berkshire Hathaway. The property is equally suited to a family with children (the Buckinghams have three) or a sophisticated couple who like to entertain.
Among the estate’s unique features are three kitchens: a large family kitchen, a catering kitchen for entertaining, and a staff kitchen/laundry room in the basement. There are staff quarters with a bedroom and bath nearby, a bit reminiscent of “Downton Abbey” or “Upstairs Downstairs.”
Upstairs, there is a contemporary and distinctive adult family room (not to be confused with the more casual family room off the main kitchen). It has a wood-paneled ceiling that reflects the wood flooring and a sophisticated marble bar.
“It’s one of the prettiest rooms in the house,” Offer says, adding that it opens out to one of three terraces, this one with an outdoor fireplace.
In all, there are six bedrooms, seven baths, and three half-baths. The main residence is approximately 10,750 square feet, while the posh cabana measures approximately 450 square feet. In addition to the typical living spaces, there’s a library, theater, gym, and luxurious spa.
The location is fit for royalty as well—at least Southern California nobility. The nearly 1-acre lot comes with canyon views and celebrity neighbors, including Ben Affleck, Tobey Maguire, Gwyneth Paltrow, Steven Spielberg, and Julia Roberts.
