Playboy Mansion for Sale — Two Icons for the Price of One
Proving that all good (or questionable) things must come to an end, Playboy Enterprises has just announced that it will soon be putting up the iconic Playboy Mansion for sale, at an asking price of $200 million. But for that “Hef-ty” price, you not only get the Holmby Hills mansion, you get Hugh Hefner himself — the deal will be structured as a “living estate,” requiring the buyer to allow 89-year-old ultimate Playboy to continue renting the house until his death.
Hefner bought what is perhaps the world’s most famous bachelor pad in 1971 for $1.05 million, which was a record high at the time. At some point Playboy Enterprises took over the estate, and rented it back to Hefner. He currently resides there with his wife, 29-year-old former Playmate of the Month Crystal Harris. She’ll have to find somewhere else to go should she, and their marriage, survive him.
Much to my own disappointment, Hef stopped throwing his world-renowned parties there several years ago. I attended several big bashes, and they were wild and crazy fun. The tres glam girls and guys wouldn’t be caught dead eating anything more than a celery stick, so my friends and I had our run of the elegant buffet tables. The hot and cold running women had their lingerie and their animal suits literally painted on, and I don’t even want to talk about what went on in the grotto pools most nights. Spending New Years Eve there in 1999, as a part of Fabio’s entourage, was an experience I’ll never forget. Sigh…
But I digress. The details on the property: it includes a 22,000-square-foot Gothic Tudor mansion that has 29 rooms, including a catering kitchen, wine cellar, home theater, separate game house, gym, tennis court and swimming pool with the notorious cave-like grotto. The parties were usually thrown in the backyard, covered by massive tents, which included the grotto. Security was tight.
The estate also includes a four bedroom guest house, on five acres of land. There are also aviaries and several exotic animal pens. The press release states that the Playboy Mansion is “one of a select few residences in L.A. with a zoo license.”
Still, I’m thinking that $200 million asking price is probably a publicity stunt. The most expensive sale in Holmby HIlls is the the larger and more elaborate Fleur de Lys Estate, which sold for $102 million in 2014. The nearby Spelling Mansion went for $85 million back in 2011, although Candy Spelling put it on the market for $150. And it’s reported that Hef hasn’t taken great care of the place — Bunnies, or Playboy models, who have lived there reveal that it’s a bit ramshackle, and purse dogs that are not house trained have taken their toll on it.
It’s reported that the the mansion will be officially listed in about a month, by Drew Fenton and Gary Gold of Hilton & Hyland, along with Mauricio Umansky of The Agency.
