Notch's New House: Jay Z and Beyonce Almost Bought It

Notch's new house

Update: This is now Notch’s new house. Minecraft founder Markus “Notch” Persson, made the winning bid for this outrageously luxurious Beverly Hills spec home. The asking price may have been $85 million, but Persson got it for a steal(?) at only $70 million. That’s pocket change for Persson who was recently bought out by Microsoft for $2.5 billion. The Swedish video game mogul closed escrow in six days. He was represented by Katia De Los Reyes, from the Aaron Group and his broker Sally Foster. Bruce Makowsky, the QVC purse tycoon, bought the house in August of 2010 for $12.65 million, then fully refurbished the estate before selling it to Persson. Makowsky was represented by Ben Bacal of Rodeo Reality’s Beverly Hills office.

Only in L.A.’s posh “Golden Triangle” (Bel Air, Holmby Hills, Beverly Hills) would a developer have the cajones to build and furnish a spec home to the tune of $85 million, with full confidence that some superstar couple like Beyonce and Jay Z could easily afford to pay cash for it.

Notch's new houseIt’s been reported that the family is impressed by the 23,000 square foot, eight bedroom, 15 bath home on just about an acre, sitting pretty atop a hill in Trousdale Estates, and overlooking the entire city to the sea. My particular favorite features are the four, count ’em, four specialty bars, a James Bond-themed tequila bar, a vodka bar, a $200,000 candy bar, and a 12-seat dining bar in the eat-in kitchen. If you count the ballet barre in the giant, mirrored gym, that would be five.

Notch's new houseOnly the swankiest of the swanky designers would do for this place: Louis Vuitton furniture, Ralph Lauren lighting, $3,700 Roberto Cavalli place settings for 24 diners, set on the custom, honey onyx dining table below a Venetian glass chandelier. And to make a really explosive impression, there’s a $200,000 giant blue hand grenade sculpture, not to mention a life-size replica of James Dean’s motorcycle, with a larger than life black and white still of the actor silently brooding over it all.

And speaking of transportation, the shiny black tile garage floor has carousels in it, as well as a lift, so you can drive your exotic sports cars into the garage, then they can be lowered down into the party room for a museum-like display. Oy vey!

The mansion is the work of Bruce Makowski, who has made a considerable fortune selling shoes and handbags on QVC over the years (why didn’t we think of that?). He’s been busy buying, renting, redesigning and selling a number of high-end homes in the best neighborhoods of Los Angeles over the past several years.
