Welcome to At Home In Hollywood
This a site for people who really enjoy great entertainment, but are overwhelmed by the countless options available and just don’t have time to see everything. It’s for those who want to know what’s worth their precious time and money.
This is a site for people who love great architecture and design, and want to see how the glorified and glamorous live, so they can admire or abhor it.
This is a site for you!
Who am I to write about such things? I’m an author, critic and reporter whose family has been involved in the entertainment industry for generations. My work has been featured on NBC, CBS, ABC, Fox, Fox News, CNN, PBS, the BBC and myriad other networks, as well as in publications like The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The Times of London and The Los Angeles Times. I’ve interviewed hundreds of celebrities, and, as the Los Angeles Correspondent for HGTV’s Frontdoor.com, I’ve toured their homes.
I’ve been a film critic, food critic, TV critic, book critic, culture critic and a real estate/design critic. I don’t like to think of myself as overly critical, but I do like to help my readers get the most out of what’s worthwhile, and avoid the worthless. As a member of the Broadcast Film Critics Association (BFCA) and the Broadcast Television Journalists Association (BTJA), I have extraordinary media access, and vote for and attend the Critics Choice Awards each year.
I constantly receive samples of various home, beauty, food and design products, and my prominent L.A. friends with exceptional taste often ply me with recommendations. I’m eager to share with you some of the real finds. You’d be surprised how many great products don’t have expensive designer labels, are quite accessible, and are created at home by people just like you and me.
A few things you won’t find on this site:
- Trashy gossip (well, not too trashy)
- Arrogant attitude
- Derision of important values
- Useful information
- Thoughtful commentary
- A sense of wonder
I’m not your basic jaded pundit. I’m still dazzled by The Princess Bride, unique walk-in closets, a good primer and Jon Hamm. My goal is to help make your life a little more fun, festive and stylish, while saving you time, money and grief. I hope you like my efforts!
Lisa Johnson Mandell

“…What does someone who just landed his or her first starring role purchase?
“The smart ones buy a bungalow in West Hollywood,” says Lisa Johnson Mandell, editor in chief of At Home in Hollywood. “They can be within walking distance of nightlife and be close to the studios and have some degree of privacy. They’re really cute homes, and a lot of them have been redone…”
“…It’s interesting, because sometimes they try to buy bigger than they really should,” Mandell said. “It’s important for them to remember when they’re just starting out that, yes, they have enough cash for a house but they don’t have enough cash for a Kim Kardashian house or a J.Lo house. They have to keep their wits about them, because sometimes their eyes are bigger than their pocketbooks.”

An IMAX home theatre, personal Candy Bar and olive grove are just some of the latest trends that take luxury amenities to the next level.

The very rich, F. Scott Fitzgerald, famously observed, are different than you and me. That extends to their homes. Just how different can be summed up in four words: “It’s not enough to….”
For example, it’s not enough to have a lavish home theatre, observes Lisa Johnson Mandell, the founder and editor-in-chief of the website At Home in Hollywood. “Everybody has a home theatre; it’s no big deal. The big thing luxury right now is the IMAX home theatre. Seth McFarlane got the very first one. Not only do you need the 12-foot floor-to-ceiling curved screen, you have to have the stadium seating and the (custom-designed) sound system, plus a subscription for the feed (that provides sporting events, first-run movies and other programs).”
At Home in Hollywood is a celebrity real estate, fashion and lifestyle website refreshingly free of snark that features the latest news and inside views of celebrity homes. The site also contains movie and television reviews as well as the hottest and most exclusive celebrity swag. Johnson is a veteran Hollywood observer, a prolific author, critic and reporter who still serves as Los Angeles correspondent for the HGTV cable network. She has been featured on all the major broadcast and cable networks as well as publications such as The Los Angeles Times, The New York Times and the Wall Street Journal.

I always believe that as a woman, my job is to lift up other women and encourage them to be their very best rather than cut them down. Without a doubt, celebs live extraordinary lifestyles. From the designer clothes they wear, the expensive cars they drive, and the luxurious parties and dinners they attend, it’s natural to want to take a peek into their world. Luckily, thanks to our celebrity interview with Lisa Johnson Mandell, we’re able to get an inside look at the homes of some of the most famous celebs.
A Look Inside Celebs’ Homes
The HGTV Los Angeles correspondent has toured the houses of many stars, including the home of Hollywood couple Kim Kardashian and Kanye West. One of Mandell’s favorite parts of their Hidden Hills house was the master bedroom. “The master suite is fabulous and enormous. It’s like 3,000 square feet, which is bigger than most of our homes,” she reveals. “It has a sitting room, a kitchenette, his-and-her bathrooms, his-and-her closets, and his-and-her dressing rooms.” That’s not the only impressive room in this 50 million dollar mansion: It also has a spa room, a gym, a courtyard with a fountain, and a backyard that can easily hold 500 people.
