Drew’s Honeymoon House — Where it is, what it cost, and what they’ll do to it

Admit it. Even if you HATE reality TV, you recognize the Property Brothers when you see them. Especially if you’re a female. Who doesn’t love a guy who’s tall, dark, handsome and knows how to swing a hammer—times two?
It seems the Scott Brothers, realtor Drew (who was recently on Dancing With the Stars) and his identical twin, contractor Jonathan, are the kings of the spin-off series, and right now they’re involved in one with the far too long title of Property Brothers At Home: Drew’s Honeymoon House .
Despite the lengthy title, I’m loving this one, because the $2.3 million Los Angeles home the love birds are remodeling is right here in our own backyard: Hancock Park/Windsor Square. Yes, Drew and his fiance Linda Phan are going to be neighbors, as soon as they have there way with this almost 100 year old house, originally built for members of the Van de Kamp bakery family.

Now the Honeymoon House truly is a fixer upper. When a home’s listing description says, “Bring your developers, home buyers, or speculators” and “Endless possibilities for development or remodel,” you know there’s work to be done. Check out some of these before photos:

Still, they got a decent deal on the place. The Tudor was listed for $2.5 million, but the got it for $2.3 million. Officially, it’s located in the “Greater Wilshire” area, where the median sales price is $1,210,000 and the median listing price is $1,867,000.
And it’s big enough, although I’m sure the Bros will add some square footage to the Honeymoon House . The house was advertised at 3,442 square feet, but there’s an additional 967 square feet on the third floor not included in the official assessment, according to Realtor Bruce Walker of Rodeo Realty, who represented the sellers,
When the couple purchased it, there were five bedrooms and four baths. When work is completed, that configuration will likely change. The lot is about a quarter of an acre, and it has a flat, grassy backyard—ample room for a small pool, or the unique water feature Walker says he’s heard that Drew hopes to install.

Drew’s Honeymoon House came with a Batchelder fireplace hearth, original moldings, hardwood floors, beautiful woodwork, fabulous tile and an interesting and well-crafted staircase, some of which they’ll keep, most of which they’re sure to demo.

But there are some things they can’t change. This neighborhood is in a Historical Preservation Overlay Zone, which means buyers can’t change the style of the front of the house, and a remodel has to be overseen by a representative of the City of Los Angeles.
Now the reno fun has already started, and I’m keeping track of their progress in weekly features on Realtor.com. For a look at what they’ve done to the place, check out:
