The lusciously Art Deco Johnny Depp Penthouse condos in downtown L.A. are being snapped up quickly
So we’re walking from the subway to the Ace Hotel recently to catch the L.A. Times‘ presidential debate watching party, and we pass by the most stunning turquoise and gold Art Deco building I’ve ever seen. “Wait a minute,” I cried, glancing up to see the four-sided clock tower on top of the Eastern Columbia Building. “I know this place! This is where the Johnny Depp penthouse condos are located! I wonder if any of the five are still available?”
Turns out one just sold a few days ago, unit No. 5, for a reasonable $2,545,000. Unit No. 5 featured two bedrooms and three baths spread over two levels, spectacular decor, and a wraparound terrace. Still available for sale are three two-bedroom units and one one-bedroom unit.
Depp, who paid $7.2 million for the five-condo collection in 2008, listed the whole enchilada, or all five condos, about a month ago for $12.78. Currently, the prices for each of the four individual units, or the entire remaining collection, are available only by request. My, how discrete!
The actor’s more colorful side is reflected in the interior spaces. The units are saturated with fabulous hues and a mix of salvaged, vintage, and modern hardware, fixtures, artwork and furniture, much of which could be negotiated into the final price.
A few of the more striking pieces include unit No. 4’s modern chandelier made of lights from an airport in Germany, and unit No. 2’s tile floor, rumored to be patterned after one of Depp’s tattoos.
There’s no word on whether or not the sale of the complex was related to Depp’s divorce from actress Amber Heard. Partners Trust listing agent Kevin Dees (son of radio host Rick Dees) told the Wall Street Journal that “it was the right time to divest of that asset.”
Depp has plenty of real estate holdings, including a 37-acre vineyard in France, a private island in the Bahamas, and a Mediterranean Revival–style compound tucked behind the Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles, which I’ve actually visited…sort of.
Now if I were ever to consider living downtown (and you never know), I would definitely pick one of the Johnny Depp penthouse condos. Every time I find myself in the city center, I think, “I can definitely see the appeal. A little pied a Depp, I mean pied a terre, might be just the thing!”
