When The Purple One died suddenly on Thursday April 21 at the age of 57, the world was stunned.
Not only had we lost a brilliant musician and pop culture pioneer, we would never know what he would have worn next. It was always something stunning. But the Prince style sings on.
Who will ever forget the headline-grabbing purple tunic he wore to a basketball game last month…
…or how about his internet-breaking passport photo that looks like he’s stepped right out of the pages of GQ?
Prince was a fashion plate who played it close to the vest – as with everything else in his amazing life, he maintained the mystique, and seldom mentioned his clothiers. But we do know he loved lavish and luxe fabrics like velvet, silk, and satin. He preferred patterns and layers, going for paisleys, ruffles and tassels.
But, even when completely nude, he still emanated vogue and style.
Unlike most male rock stars – with the exception of David Bowie – Prince was a sex symbol and an innovator of gender fluidity, who used fashion as a vehicle to reinvent himself and his music to the masses of new and existing fans.
Check out the spangled star in a variety of outfits from the late 1970s right up to 2016:
