When Anastasia Steele needs a little space from Christian Grey, or, in the real world, when Dakota Johnson needs to get away from the steaming, screaming media circus that has surrounded her ever since she stole the show in Fifty Shades of Grey, respite could be just a quick drive up the coast to her daddy Don Johnson’s super fab beach estate in Montecito. But Dakota Johnson and her dad Don won’t be bonding there much longer, as he recently put his 11,229 foot spread on the market for nearly $15 million.
I’m guessing, now that everyone knows the movie is not as steamy as the books and that Dakota’s performance has been critically acclaimed, that a private screening of the notorious film might have happened right there on the pretty premises. Regardless, Don Johnson and his wife Kelley Phleger are now asking $14,9 million for their gorgeous property, and chances are they’ll get it. It really is a jewel, no matter who has lived there and what may or may not have been screened.
The French Country estate covers 2.76 acres of lush, sea-view land, and features five bedrooms and eight bathrooms. It’s a prime property in trendy, Santa Barbara-close Montecito, where Oprah, Ellen and Drew (as in Barrymore) have also hung their hats. Don Johnson’s estate encompasses a grove of mature oak trees, and it has sweeping vistas of the ocean, mountains and Channel Islands. Known as “Shack des Chênes,” there are huge windows throughout, taking maximum advantage of the views and the almost constant sunshine. Even the children’s bedrooms open out onto beautiful, verdant gardens.
The family room is a stunner, with its A-frame ceiling and dynamic windows. The Johnson family reports that they’ve spent many a happy hour together there. The large chef’s kitchen with state of the art appliances is also impressive.
In addition, there’s a nice, two-level guest house on the grounds, along with other amenities like a wood-burning outdoor fireplace, a large swimming pool, a basketball court and trampoline play area and a dog run and kennel.
So if this property is so ideal, why might Don Johnson and family be leaving it? “The only reason we are moving from this house is that we found another property and it is a horse property and we want to experience that way of living in Montecito,” Johnson told The Agency’s Kathrin Nicholson, Director, Residential Estates, in an exclusive interview.
